LS1 in a cobalt?
LS1 in a cobalt?
Just wanted to see if anyone has herd about puting a LS1 or an LS3 in to a cobalt. Im thinking about pulling the engine out of my car and mocking up a LS3 block in there. i Know it wont be easy as i have already put a supercharged smal block chevy in to a 68 mustang. Doing that took a long time and i had to remake alot of stuff, trans tunnel, firewall...etc. i just think it would be bad a$$ to see what this car would do with 500+ hp and rear wheel drive.
Pretty much. There isn't a way you're going to be able to put a motor meant for RWD cars in the cobalt without having to redo the floor boards and other structure. The Cobalt's body is not designed to accomodate RWD or AWD setups.
If you must insist on a V8, you will probably need to look at V8's designed for use in FWD applications such as the Cadillac Northstar series and the LS4... but even that is going to be a difficult route with a ton of fabrication.

As far as doing this type of build, there is definitely alot of fabrication that needs to be done. However, if the plan from the get go is a V8 (mine wasn't) then certain things are simplified. The likelyhood is that the engine will not need to sit back as far as mine because my front suspension was already done before we went to the V8.
Also, if you are not planning on racing at a track then you can forgo the need for the rollcage but you are still likely going want to some modifications to have wider tires on the back. Your gas tank is gone because you need to put a rear end there so plan on a fuel cell or two.
It has been suggested that you just go to a rwd based car from the start which is good advice unless you have the fabrication skills to do most of the work. The cost of the labor far out weighs the cost of parts. Another option is look up irocmitch on here as the have done a 272 SBC into a Cobalt at a fraction of the cost/time than my build. Then again, they never used JBP and they planned for a V8 from the start.
If you do this, keep me informed as I would love to see it it.

I guess I never understood why people are interested in doing these swaps in the first place. Unless its purely out of love for moddifying cars and stuff like that. I guess if you have the time and money and skill go for it. As for me, I LOVE my LNF
Complete waste of time, have you looked at a dyno sheet of a LS1 vs a Stage 1 LNF, the power and tq are virtually the same. Difference being the immense cost and weight difference of doing the LS1.
You would be a complete moron to take an engine light years ahead in technology and replace it with a dinosaur that isn't capable of anything more. So go ahead spend 100,000 to run 10s, the rest of us can do it for less than half that.

Thanks for the info Rod. i know the cost of doing this will be high, but i do all the work myself and have a good friend that has a machine shop so it will be more parts than anything. BTW your car looks sick!
