performance question...

hello all, new to the forums, i dont have a cobalt but i do have some questinos before i might buy one. my last car was a grand prix GTP that ran a 12.6@112 on street tires. can a full bolt on cobalt ss/tc match that or beat that? i sold that car and want something different but my stipulation is it has to be able to go faster without spendind a boat load of money. also do u guys know how well the drivetrain holds up to increased power, thanks guys.

Not on street tires.... lol. Those GTPs launch super hard and the gearing is such an advantage off the line. Not to mention you have to get used to driving a stick now with a fairly short first gear and wheel hop. But lemme tell you.... I don't have a turbo'd cobalt... But you wont regret it. Cobalts are super fun/fairly cheap cars to mod and have fun with. Plus, the cobalt forums are the best ones

I can say with a fair amount of certainty that to get to 12.6 you'll need a FULLY bolted car with stock turbo, or a turbo swap. Either way you probably will need a new clutch, the stocker has been proven to slip around 310 to 320 whp.

Now, with that being said, if you want to jump on drag radials, 12's have been hit with just an exhaust/tune/DR's (and clutch) Look up Hahn Racecraft's website and posts.

Interesting first post for sure.

We have seen cars in the 13.6-13.7 range stock. Getting that extra second will require some cash. Full bolt ons, a tune, and some drag radials will get you where you want.

Mess with supporting mods like suspension and mounts and it is more than obtainable. Like said, you will need a new clutch if you mess with that power.

That's a good point. What are the internals of the LNF?

according to GM it has forged rod's and crank but the pistons are just that cast crap. so im sure with pistons it sould handle whatever you could give it.

it takes about 360 crank hp to make 3100 lbs(2900lb ss/tc plus 200 pd driver) go 112 mph

so figure about 15% driveline loss and 360 hp is about 306 to the front wheels or so

so the mph would be pretty easy to do with bolt ons and a tune with a ss/tc, but the et would require a great launch and some sticky tires

some have already gone 110 mph already on this board

i guage those numbers by this link, its forward motion out of de, where i used to have my old glhs charger modded and tuned years ago. ironically that also went a best of 12.61 at 112, but that only weighed 2400 lbs.

he has gone srt4 neon now. the srt4 neon weighs pretty close to a stock ss/tc, maybe a few pounds less, high 2800's or so. ss/tc coupe is about 2910 or so without driver.

here is a link. if you scroll down the page their neon made 303 wheel hp and 380 tq and went 112 on drag radials. it also made 332 and went 115.6 on drags also.

what do you want from the car? is it just to beat youre previous times or are you just using that for comparison. I dont see my car doing 12.6 on street tires no way but this car has so much more going for it then just 1/4 mile times and im sure you would still be happy if it broke 12s or even very low 13s. for reasonable money you can make this car a lot faster then stock. Best thing to do would be to find some one close with a tune and bolt ons and go for a ride with them see what you think.

If you're looking for some mods, just look up www.turbosystem.com or www.turbotechracing.com and for your tuning needs you can check www.turbosystem.com or www.clearimageautomotive.com . I just got off the phone with Beth at Clear Image Automotive, great person, great service and I ordered my tuner for $250.
