most notice problems at or before 20k miles, almost in every case it is noticed before the powertrain warranty is up.

You would think it would show up rather early most of the time...it's a fundamental defect with little *wear and tear* factor.

"in every case it is noticed before the powertrain warranty is up"

..I would hope so..100K miles/5yrs!

so many factors in casting you cant accurately predict how long a block will last even though it dye tested fine.

Out of curiosity, if I did have this issue, would I buy this to fix that?

Cobalt & Ion ---> ZZ Performance

I believe it's the block and not the heads.

How would you strengthen the block?

From my experience, no. Mine gave up at 24,500ish.

You can't. It is what it is.

Were there any indications prior....like losing coolant much earlier?

Not at all, just got "low coolant" on the DIC one day. Took it to the dealership after almost 700 miles (I was out of the state on a quick day trip), they compression tested it along with many other tests and found nothing, so they put some dye in it and sent me on my way. About 150 miles later, "low coolant" again, and thats when I got my new motor. It even ran fine all the way til the end.

I have an LSJ. Ive topped off my coolant like 6-7 times in a year. I know this mostly affects LNFs, but any LSJs have this problem? Any other possibilities? Head gasket? Water Pump?

Seriously there's nothing we can do? Sleeving anything? That sucks, maybe ZZP will make a solution if we ask?

No, it's a defect when they poured the casting. It's not just in the cylinder's, coolant passages, etc.

There just can't be any easy solution. It's like the '06-'08 R18 Civic engine blocks that are cracking at 60K miles. Honda just replaces them as they crack. There's no way to strengthen the block to remedy the casting issue.

although im not smoking anything. the oil looks fine.

andddddd no warranty anymore =[ wow motors are like 5 grand

this should be a recall though. there have been a number of leaky blocks hell i have a buddy with an 09 as well that had one.
If you're a 2009, you should still have the powertrain warranty unless you somehow racked up over 100,000 miles on an 09.

Well I don't even have 10k miles yet and I'm a 2009, but if something like this happens, man that'll suck to have to remove everything on my car and take it in. Better than buying a motor I guess.

i have a good feeling i got a prorous block too. i bought my car used from a chevy dealership , got extra warranty to. When i first got it i notice in the engine bay they noted "coolant dye added" i asked my dad he said it could of had a leak so they added dye to trace it with a black light . but since ive had the car , ive had the "lowcoolant" probably come up 3-4 times a year. Bringing the car in sat for a po446 fix might as well tell them to check for this too?
