Should I get an oil catch can?
Long story short, no matter how good your engine is, there WILL be some blow by past the piston rings. The pcv helps get this vapor out of the crank case before it contaminates the oil, thinning it out and trashing your bearings.
Most guys that do a pcv delete to it on drag or track motors that have frequent oil changes and expected shorter life.
One method of keeping it out of the I take is welding an evac bung on the downpipe, so that the Venturi effect of the passing exhaust gas pulls a vac on the case. There ideally needs to be a fresh air Inlet somewhere still to help with the flow.
This is not so good for emissions.
The best option is to bump up the factory system. The stock lsj system works by pulling vac from the intake manifold through the check valve, fresh air comes in through the line that runs to your intake. Under boost, the check valve closes to keep from boosting the crankcase. The oil you see in your intake/tb/sc mostly comes from this. There is pressure in the crankcase from blow by and it has to go somewhere.
Powell's system maintains all of these functions while filtering out the oil vapor in the line running to the intake.
I know there are other details I missed but I think that sums it up in an easy to understand way.
