Synthetic Oil Change Interval? 3k / 5k

Good afternoon,

I am assuming most of you run synthetic oil but what are your oil change intervals? The dealer said 3k but was wondering if I can wait till 5k? I have seen / read guys running synthetic going as long as 10k, not that I would but I dont see 5k as being an issue. On my last car I did 5k and that was on a worked motor.

Thank you,

most synthetic oil tests from mobil 1 and amsoil have stated full synthetic oils can last over 10k. Most manufacturers that require full synthetic in their cars recomend oil change interval every 10k, this includes audi, bmw, merc.

Personally I change mine every 5 just to be safe.

Everyone with a SS/SC or SS/TC has to run synthetic... Preferably Mobil 1... Doing it every 3k is a waste of money, 5k is fine, sometimes I wait til 7k, and my engine runs really clean.

Dealers make most of their money off service. Of course they will tell you to change it every 3k miles. Its more money in their pocket.

GM built the car so they should know best how to take care of it. Follow the manual which says change it when the OLM is at 10%.

To be honest it depends on how hard you get on it. You have to realize that blow by ruins the effectiveness of oil. If I go by the DIC I dont like what comes out of my motor but now I change it around 3k miles sometimes 4 if im lazy.

When the display gets to 5% I start to think about when I am going to change it. When it gets to 0%, I try to have it changed within the next 200 miles. Oil comes out clean everytime, filter is in good shape and I never see any metallic particles in the oil. I use the high mileage Mobil 1, and the car calls for and is calibrated for regular Mobil 1.

and full synthetic 7.5-10k. this is ford's recomendations. for some reason now they say you can go 10k on theyre semi-syn. oil which i dont dare do

Thank you,

As general rule change it at 20% on the oil life...that's around 6000 Mi for me.

Smile I go by the oil life monitor, but ...

Generally speaking when it hits the 40's I change it. I'd say for me that works out to every 5ish K or so.

The camaro has an oil life monitor, and I run synthetic in it as well. Hell - it's in every vehicle I own.

At any rate, my rule for it was 5K or when the light came on, whichever came first.

To each, their own.

I work at a dealership (GM) and I reccomend 5-6k for synthetic. This factors in many 100+ degree days during the summer time and lots of traffic. Also the high amount of dust we have blowing around in the summertime.

I usually change mine every 5k or just below 40% on the OLM. Since this is a turbocharged engine, that's what I'd reccomend. Oil is alot cheaper than an engine.

Oh... interesting note about GM's oil life monitor. On any car with a 3.6L V6 engine, the OLM was programmed to reccomend oil changes every 8-10k for both Synthetic and conventional oils. That's all fine and dandy until the timing chains started to stretch on pretty much all of the engines out there that had such long oil change intervals.

It got to the point where GM has issued a PCM calibration update to shorten the OLM to show 0% at 5k miles... regardless of whether or not you're using synthetic. Our customers who have been changing their oil every 3-5k haven't had any problems.
