TC exhaust manifold gets HOTTTT!
ok, so this is my first turbo'd car so perhaps this is normal, BUT, has any new SS/TC owners out there looked under the hood at night after driving for a while??? just below the turbo housing behind the engine, you can see the exhaust manifold glowing like crazy! now I'm not talking about right after I"ve been driving the **** outa the car, I mean if I go for a twenty minute drive, and treat it nice and gentle, without dipping into the boost for more than a second or two after a gear change. now the car only has 10,000 kms on it, or about 8000 miles for my american friends
a buddy of mine had a clogged cat on his ss/sc, and his exhaust mani used to glow brightly untill he got it fixed! but the cat CAN'T be clogged yet can it??? the car works fine! no loss in power that i can tell!
anyways, because of this I Always let the car idle for at least two minutes before shutting it down after a drive. even longer if I've been pushing it. anyways, just a question I thought I'd throw out there! wondering if anyone else has noticed something like this.

If it's dumping fuel that would cause it. CAT warming mode put the camshafts in high overlap, opens the throttle and retards the ignition timing. THis make the manifold quite hot in a short period of time.
Turbo manifolds glow in the dark anyway, usually after youve been beating the **** out of it.
But if it's orange after a short trip of normal driving something is amiss.

As far as I know, about you letting your car idle for two minutes after you drive it, I believe we have something on our cars, that keeps the oil circulating through the turbo, so it won't "cake" on it while it's still hot.

I was looking for another thread about this, but couldn't find it. not sure why it glows, but its quite noticable even after a gentle drive. I will keep letting it idle for a bit after driving though. even if there is a feature that keeps the oil circulating or whatever, I'd rather be safe than sorry! like I said, the car seems to work great, its just something that makes me nervous when I can see glowing under the turbo after driving for a while. thanks for the input guys!

The oil pump is mechanical, when the engine stops so does the oil.

I just noticed mine glowing tonight after a spirited drive, I wouldn't even say it was a ***** to the wall drive. I thought it was because I was tuned and running 22psi and it being night time. I dont think I would have seen it during the day. The only reason I saw it was I let an old friend drive us threw some twistys tonight and he was so impressed that he wanted to take a look at the engine and I saw it as soon as I popped the hood. I wasn't to worried about it due to the fact that I have seen allot of turbo cars do that. Gyrocon are you stock, at least at the time of this thread? I will run it hard this weekend and take vid, day and night to see what we can see.
I don't know how true this is but its what I have been told. The turbo siphons the coolant through once the car is off due to the difference in the temps of the coolant in the turbo and the coolant temp in the lines. As the coolant that is in the turbo gets hot the cooler fluid gets pulled in as the hotter fluid makes its way out. As far as the oil goes the synthetic oil won't gum up as it is boiled past its heat range and stick to the bearings like conventional oil does. I am no expert.
