Thinking about buying a cobalt
Thinking about buying a cobalt
Hey everyone, first post on here so go easy on me
So i currently drive an 07 g5 base, and it being my first car...was fun...but i really want something with more power now. I've absolutely fallin in love with the look of our car (especially the lowered and wingless look) so i've been thinking about getting a cobalt ss/tc but i wanted to know from you guys...is it worth it?
I mean its alot of power for a fwd car...do you guys really feel the torque steer when your running a tune and bolt ons? And the fact that i would have to get a tune in order to mod the car kinda makes me sad haha, but I mean i've done alot of research i just wanted your guys opinion if you were an 19 year old kid who is going to college and is going to have to pay for the insurance, would you prefer to go with like an rx-8 or genesis coupe 2.0T, i really want the cobalt but if you guys think one of those would be a better choice then let me know.
Also quick question, i know with a trifecta tune, you have to get a re-tune if you add any addition mods to your car, is it the same with a gms1 tune?

If you're about to go to college and have to pay your own insurance and car payment... it'd probably be better if you keep what you have.
An SS/TC is a worthy upgrade though. Very simple to get them around or above 300whp. And you don't have to tune it every time you put a new part on the car.

Well i mean im at a community college which my parents are paying for, but in another couple of years im off to a university which i'll have to pay for, but the idea was to sell my car now, and then use the 4 to 5 thousand i have saved up
this is for trifecta too?
and what do you mean? like right off the bat i get a tune, then later i throw on an intake and exhaust and i wont be messing with any codes or getting any problems? would i even benefit from the intake and exhaust? haha

save your money and get through college. buy yourself a nice graduation present. and if you still want a cobalt then you'll be able to get it exactly how you want it.
from what i've seen from people trying to mod on a budget. stuff gets halfassed and breaks and/or doesn't perform and they're left redoing it only to spend more money.

You don't need an intake on an LNF. Swapping to a cat-less downpipe would be the best thing you could do, but living in Cali, I don't know how easy/accepted that would be for you. Cat-back isn't needed, either. Stock is quite adequate.
And personally, I'd steer clear of a Trifecta tune. A well known tuner with HPTuners would be your best bet. Otherwise, stick with the GMS1 tune/set-up. Either way, yes, you can add parts on after getting tuned. These aren't WRX's. You don't have to get the thing tuned for each and every part you add to it.

Not to mention, I get tired of seeing people post in For Sale threads and Vendor threads that "I'd love to get this, but I'm a broke college student". 3/4 of the users on this site are evidently broke college students.
This. Which is why I mentioned it in the first place.

Just race a stock tc in your g5. You'll be sold when that happens. You may get the car and not even want a tune. But yes get the downpipr and tune and you'll walk anyone else with a sport compact at your school more than likely.

on a different note, if ur willing to get a supercharged balt, those are going for dirt cheap now that the turbo models came out. like 9-12,000 dirt cheap, oppposed to, say, 18xxx. much easier on a budget, and a good stage 2 kit with supporting mods (1-2000 bucks maybe) should take u to about what the turbo models can do stock.
If I was 19 and in college I wouldn't be stupid enough to buy a car unless I needed it. College is hard enough without having to work tons of hours to pay for a car on top of classes, place to live, food, money to go out, etc.

Nothing wrong with having financial responsibility and college. That's what I do! I am a college student pay my own payment and insurance. My parents don't pay for my college GE does since that's who I work for.
But yeah the Cobalt is a fast fun car for a FWD. I don't know how picky you are but after having my car for a year I no longer want it as much as I did 6 months ago. I know a lot of people diss GTIs but I'm really considering one. But that's another story. My perception is people experience the power then move on to something else rather quickly. Seems like the popular thing to do is get an evo after a cobalt.

for those that are saying save my money since im in college, im sorry but im getting a new car lol, my hobby is cars and i hate pulling up to a car meet with all these kids my age with evos and subis and bmws and all these nice ***** that there actually paying for and not someything mommy and daddy gave them lol and here i pull up with my 150 hp g5 with an exhaust rofl,
ive had the car for 3 years and i want something faster, and im not going to be paying that much for the new car, like i said i have about 4k in the bank saved towards a new car, kbb says i can sell my car for around 12 with it being in excellent, so lets say i sell it for 10k, so im gonna be paying like and extra 2k on monthly payments or a loan from the bank haha, its not that bad.

If your friends only like you for what you have... over who you are. That's sad. You shouldn't need a "Super nice car" to fit in.
I say if you think you can handle it financially. Do it. If you're having doubts. Don't.
The SS/TC Is a fun car (Even though mine is SC) It's still fun.
Just don't break yourself.

Nothing wrong with being a college student and having a car to get around with or to commute to school with. Been there done that. Deal is you need it to be dependable because repairs are a bullet you can't afford to take. And when modding cars, mod it right or mod it twice (or more). I say don't screw with the car until you can afford to do it right the first time and be able accept the risk of failures and/or repairs the modding can create.
