what possible damage could i do???
what possible damage could i do???
i have a stock 08 cobalt ss/tc
Ive always gotten the premium fuel for my car (91-93 octane) but i wanted to know what
possible damage could i do if i got regular all the time from now on???
i do know the car is tuned to run on 91 octane and the computer can adapt to 93

honestly if you can't afford the extra 2 dollars/tank for premium, then you shouldn't have bought a new car. stop being so cheap.
well, you're gas mileage would be worse, your performance would be worse, and you won't get the full potential out of the car. it will cost more in gas than using premium since you'll be getting worse mileage.

Well the nice thing about our cars is that it can tell how volatile the gas is, so if you put regular in it will be more volatile, the computer will compensate for the by adjusting the cam phasing and timing, it will not hurt your car, now that is assuming it is stock.
The car is tuned for 91 but also has an octane map for 87. Using 93 makes no difference unless you have tuned for it or unless you are getting knock with 91.
If you run 87 all the time the car will always run off the low octane map. That means less gas mileage and less power. The other problem with running 87 is that if you do decide you want to get on it hard you WILL knock. The car will pull timing to compensate, but any knock is bad knock and it only takes one detonation to cause damage. So if you do run 87 I would not drive hard. If you run 89 it will be better but if you are bucking up for 89 might as well buck up a little more and use the 91.
Moral of the story: You bought a performance car so use 91 octane fuel
