Getting nervous about assembling my lower end. My friend is telling me every bearing clearance has to be checked with some crushing wire? I thought it was simply putting it together with new bearings and torquing it to spec?

your buddy is correct and its called plasti gauge and it is a bitch to use on the crank because of the main bed plate and you will need to reuse a set of old main bolts to do it as you need to torque it then take it apart to read the plasti gauge i have seen people measure the crank and if its within spec they roll with it but you need to have both ends of your rods torqued to spec and measured to see if they are in spec

Lots to do and think about to do it right. U dont want to be here again. Well at least for a year or 2. Just cuz ur putting badass parts in ur engine doesn't mean it will last 100,000 miles
If u get 25,000 before u have to rering and bearing it ur doin good.
Im at 42,000 an im starting to hear a lil forged piston slap on cold start up. Not a big deal but a sign it time for some internal TLC.

Plasti gauging tonight.

Oh and how I love buying rods twice... Cavisunfire sent me a rod that was fucked so I just had to buy a new set of 4340 rods.

Nope. First I was getting one at 50% off.

Then I was no longer getting the discount.

Now I can't buy just one because they are balanced in sets. I know they are, I don't care. I got a good deal but that's not the point I shouldn't have to buy them twice.

Tell cavisunfire you want your money back for selling junk rods. If he's any sort of a good guy he would take them back.

good move, you are going to love the different things you can do to a turbo. Electronic boost control, BOV sounds, spring swaps for different boost levels. Its just always something to tweak and make better. Be prepared though for boost bugs, such as leaks, quirks, etc. But you can take the time and play with the setup to work them out. Love my car when it starts to make the boost comression sounds. Just so much fun in a DD.

Our engines are built to tighter tolerances than other engines. Most of the time you are going to be fine, dont worry, all you are doing is using the plastigauge to make sure its in spec. Most likely it will be. The ecotec is an incredible piece of engineering.

As a technique:
After you have torqued all your bed plate bolts down and using GM Ac Delco RTV you can give the crank a spin and if it spins freely: if its to the point of slop you dont have the right clamping force, found this out by using the wrong RTV. If you spin it and there is a bit of spin and less slip, you got the right bearing clearance and clamping force from the TTY bolts. I use this when setting up bearings in axles. There is a feel for the tolerance, you will know if its sloppy.

Listed below, took this pic to help others get the right stuff for the job. Dont use any other RTV. This tube says RTV in the description on the back, not to be confused with crappy permatex.

DONT FORGET ASSEMBLY LUBE ALL BEARING SURFACES!

It won't be my first Turbo car . I love the exhaust sounds from Turbo cars soooooooo much better. My buddies mk vi gti... he's stage two with 2.5 Turbo back with just a muffler and it sounds amazing. The sc scream is nice but, the exhaust sounds like **** on my car :-\ . The reason why I went with the sc over the tc was the price . But, how my car drove, I was dumb founded, it has to be the best riding and handling fwd drive I've ever driven. And I honestly didn't see the point and paying twice as much for a lnf that had more mileage.
First Turbo car was 95 gsx, second was 03 svt focus, I turboed it. Which was a huge mistake. My gsx sounded like **** lol but the focus sounded good.

And I hate losing to my buddies goat. That he bought cause my car would rape his old one... and he paid way too much for it. Lol. To only beat me by about a car and a half lol.I want 350whp at the moment but, I'm sure after awhile I'll want more and that's why I'm not going TVS.

Yeah its a pay to play and catch game. I was the same way, didnt want to buy a new car to build on. I got my SS for 11000 and put a 2000 turbo kit on it without a proper WOT tune and then had to build my motor. Still have less than 20,000 in my car all said in done and that includes custom drilled rare wheels, suspension, clutch kit, all supporting mods, full gauge setup, full exhaust, etc etc. Still fell like I have a lot of car for the money.

You could go out and buy a 20,000 dollar car and it would be all new and shiny but still slow and not have all the heart and time put into it to make it your own. Its a labor of love, frustration, time, and money.

the ecotecs are not built to a tighter spec then other engines plasti gauge is used to check oil clearance and gives a in the ball park measurement but its not used to see if the crank is in spec as for your spinning theory your off you cant tell if its within spec by spinning the crank or if its torqued correctly or not
