nothing really needed to remove it. Just get all the freon(sp?) out of the lines then cut the lines out. take the compressor out and gut it so it becomes a idler pulley and your done ...

yea thats kinda what i figured, my engine is currently outta the car so i have a lot of room to work. i was wondering if there is a different pulley/belt configuration if i were to completely get rid of the whole unit. rather than having it free spinning id rather remove it and have less weight.

I don't think you can completely remove the AC unit unless you put an idler in its place at least. I think because of the way the belt runs you have to do that, or gut the AC and use it that way.

yep. you'll need an idler of some kind. the belt cant go from the blower to the crank because the tensioner is in the way.
