Not necessarily. By that logic the Injen filter should give a CEL cause it is an oiled filter just like the K&N. The oil has little or nothing to do with the CEL. As soon as i put the lid back on the intake the light went away, with the K&N still there. I had run it w/ the cover before removing it as well. I only removed the cover for more sc whine.
If you leave the stock airbox on and just remove the bottom cover you have air coming in from 2 directions and this can cause the MAF to read funny.
