Affordable Performance Question

Hey, I was just wondering what kind of mods would give me good performance for an affordable price. I'm 18 and in college so I don't have a lot money. If you could give me ideas on what parts to get first or builds that would be very helpful. I have the 2007 cobalt ss/sc. I'm trying to get a lot of acceleration for street racing. Any input helps. Thanks!

Well with anything, intakes are a number one choice, usually between 100-200 bucks can get you a good one, also exhausts are great, from just a muffler to a whole system. Just muffler with install maybe around 200-350, bolt on catbacks 350 on up. Those are mainly the cheapest upgrades, and the first upgrades, many do.

I don't street race much at all, but I'm saying if someone pulls up next to me revving their engine I want to be able to take them off the start. I don't start things but I'd like to finish on a good note if you know what I mean.

What do you consider affordable?

S2 will run you 550$ from CED plus install.

Or you can get a cat back from 330$ up to 800$.

You can do the airbox mod for 30ish$ depending on what filter you want and you can see how to do that in the "How to" section of the forum.

I/H/E or Intake/Headers/Exhaust mostly to make your car sound nice if you want more power, pulley swap is the way to go unless you dont know much about the LSJ in that case stick with bolt-ons better than a blown engine

By affordable I mean just cheap things around $200 or something. But if I will get more gains out of something more I can save up. Like the intake gains are around 7hp for about $200ish and the S2 you say is $550 and i think it puts you at 245hp, I think it would be smarter to save up for the S2 and it would be better price/performance wise.

And also you are talking about the GMP Stage 2 kit Right. What about the other stage kits from other manufactures like cobalt addiction. There kits say they will produce more power. Are these reliable too or should I stick with GMP S2?

GMPP stage 2 if installed by a dealer will keep it under warranty, so that would be your best bet.

So are the GMP parts the only ones under warranty. If so, what all do they make and/or can you give me a site to look at them.

for around your price range, your best bet would probably be to do some traction mods now. tranny mounts and a motor mount. won't add any power, but will let you better use the power you have.

Mounts, whats a good site to get them at. And you say it wont add power but better use your power. Does that mean it will be faster?

www.turbotechracing.com got the best parts you need. Yes it will be faster, it allows for more traction, less or no wheel hop, and better grip. More grip meens faster times. Engine mount is around 150, tranny mounts are about 60ish. Neither are hard to install, just check them out.

If your wanting some power for the street and won't be out racing all the time my scenario is probably best.
Get a Ingalls Torque Dampener - $140 ~new
$80 - 90 used
Stage 2 - $550 ~ Crate Engine Depot
$300 - 700 if you look around and get lucky on ebay
Nate's 2.9 pulley - $50 New from smoothflowpulleys.com

And finally an intake - $80 - 300 ~new from ebay cai's to big names like injen and K&N
- $120 - 200 for a used good intake.

This will get you enough power to hang with stock LS1 F-bodies.
Hopw this helps!

turbo tech is one of the best vendors on this site, www.turbotechracing.com will have everything you need.

what the mounts will do is stiffen everything up. better, smoother faster shifts, less wheelhop. before I put the mounts in, i would NEVER take the car to the top of first, and could go MAYBE half throttle. and on the 1-2 shift i had to take my time otherwise i would just hop and spin like crazy. now i can take it to the top of first no problem, and bang it hard to 2nd without the hop. it's probably one of the best mods i have done.

most people like to add power mod after power mod and then bitch about traction. that's why i would get it out of the way. if people did a few traction mods instead of spending all their money on adding horsepower, we would have a lot more cars running better times here.

One of you said to get the torque damper and the other said to get the engine mount. Is there a difference and/or which is better.

So far I think i'll get the motor and tranny mounts, then the Stage 2, and maybe the GMPP exhaust because it's fairly cheap. Any other inputs help.

Also, I'm just getting into engines so do you think I would still be able to install the mounts?

What is the water/methane injection? Is that NO2 or something different? and is it safe?

Will I get more gains out of a CAI or Exhaust?

And is it worth the extra money to get a CAI or should I just do the air box mod?

Thanks for the replies!
