continual coolant temperature fluctuation

Prior to replacing a stuck open thermostat, my coolant temperature would generally stay at a specific number. However, after it's replacement, I've noticed my coolant temperature no longer stays constant. It will typically fluctuate between 172-176, changing every few seconds or so. Has anyone else experienced continual small variations in their coolant temps? Perhaps I still have a small amount of air in the system?

Sounds like air most definitely.

Just take the cap off of the overfill tank, turn on the car, blast the heat, and find something else to do for like 15 minutes.

Problem solved.

Thanks for the input, I've done this numerous times tho without any results. I too believe there is still air in the system, but at this point I'm not sure what else I can try.

i know this is alittle off topic, but did you replace the thermostat yourself or did you have a shop or dealer do it?

my best friend is a professional mechanic, he did the thermostat, motor mounts, plugs, and fuel filter at the same time.

anyone else want to take a stab at this?

my balt use to run like 187ish at all time when i first got it. i threw a CAI on it and now it runs colder when just sitting idleing like 167 and if i run it hard and then idle t will run like 197. im assuming i just need a tune for the CAI and it all will be good again. never really thought about this untill just now when i read your post.

i got air in mine too. it goes up and down 5-7 degrees in a matter of seconds. burped the system once and got rid of it, then it came back again so i said screw it... i think i need the actual purging device and i'm not spending any money on one of those to use it once
