Coolant Temp Issue

Im seeing my temps go up to around 225 degrees before my fans kick on. This is only while idleing. At other times while driving it may go up to 190 but not for long. Wondering if im having a thermostat issue. If so where is the thermostat located on our cars?

Dude your not the only one. I to am having the same problems. If I let it sit a while at idle it will be up in the 200's. If I am driving it stays between 180 and 190.

i think i found a fix. i guess in hp tuners you can turn your fan on at about 192 degrees. so it doesnt idle so hot.

That is true.

Its fine actually though... i do have my fans coming on at 190 i believe as well.. but i have personally not seen temps past 200 on my car.. but it IS COMMON for people to hit 224 on a regular basis.. stop and go seems to do it, along with sitting on the hot road for a period of time during traffic..

normal oporation....I think about 225 the vehicle commands low fans speed on, and 230 high fan speed, unless you have the a/c on.

It's a gradual increase in the fan speed as the temp gets hotter but 225 is not uncommon in stop and go traffic. You should check it out while waiting in the drive thru at BurgerKing on a hot summer day.

Any way with HPTuners you can increase the fan speed and keep it a little cooler, or buy bigger fans.

I usually kick on my AC if it creeps too far over 200, and then it comes right back down to 190. 225 just seems high to me...

yeah i dont like my car hitting temps of 225. i will have my tuner change this for me

lol for some reason my brother and dad believe turning on the fan at 192 degrees is a terrible idea. any thoughts why this would be a bad idea?

thats what i said but they continue to argue with me about how it will keep my engine below operating temp. i told them my thermostat is a 180 degree and the fan will turn off when it hits 191 so my engine will never be below operating temp

operating temperature is 180..

you can have the fans turn off when ever u want, but normally when they get below 190, they turn off anyway.

Not sure how HP Tuners does it but my old Trifecta tune would turn fans on low at 192 then ramp up to 100% by 198.

The only thing that happens with turning the fans on earlier is the fans will wear at sooner. But who cares.

even after i tell him that the car is 180 he continues to argue with me saying tis too cold. it wont operate correctly. he thinks because gm has set it to 225 before the fan comes on that its the best way to run the car. i believe keeping it cooler down to the 192 is a much better option. common sense says dont let your engine run hot..

180 is where it should be.

220 is too high.

Show him this thread... He is mistaken with the cobalt...

The reason I wouldn't let it sit at 220s is that you heat soak everything. My Intake Air Temperature would be too high due to heat soak.

My car started doing this a few months ago. It hit 225 one night waiting in line at the gate to base, and then the fans kicked on and it went back to 185ish. I bought a new thermostat and have been planning on replacing it, but it looks like a complete PIA.
