dont do this. the cobalts arent made to use e85. if you want to use it buy an impala.

big NO. Besides when you use E85 in a car that was designed to run on it, they get WORSE performance.

 

If you convert the car to run on E85, there are gains to be had. E85 has the equivelant of 107 octane. It has less overall energy per unit than straight gasoline, so the 107 equivelancy will make less power than say VP105 or even Rebel pump 100 octane. BUT - it's a cheap way to turn the boost up and advance the hell outta your timing for $.050 to $1 less per gallon than unleaded premium, much less the cost of race gas. So - dollar for dollar, you can make more HP with E85 than with pump premium, though less than with real race gas.

Example - there's a guy in town who's boosted 4 banger made 285 whp on pump 93, 364 whp on pump 100, at 8 and 13 psi respectively. An E85 comversion and a re-tune later, he's making 423 at the wheels with the boost at nearly 20 psi. Gets **** for mileage, but he's paying more than $3 a gallon less than he did for Rebel 100 and making 80 more hp.

I'm considering making the switch when I tear into mine this winter, we'll see. :shrug:

 

I have been running E85 for over a year in my car. Car likes it to. You will loose MPG in town but once you get on the open highway youll only see a very slight difference. Cold starts suck also so over winter I run about a 50/50 blend but this year Im gonna try a block heater to keep some heat in the motor and see how it does.

 

Did you do an actual conversion, or are you just shoving it full of E85 as it sits? Was your 12.84 second run on E85? And if so, what are you doing to tune for it?

 

Hp tuners works wonders when you know how to use it. The 12.84 was on gas but I have run with E85 in it.

 

Whats your iat's like? I noticed a drop in temps with e100 since it is essentially alcohol. I make my own for about .50 a gallon from sugar and discarded alcohol. Less gas milage but better performance. You can build your own still for under $800

 

Yeah, you CAN run E85 in the car, but you need to tune for it.

There hasn't been much long term testing on how the fuel system holds up to E85, so you may be replacing fuel parts a few years down the road.

 

I plan on doing this here pretty soon and would like all the info i can get... and not from you Anti-E85 naysayers...

ive seen daily driven 500+whp evo's sti's and even civics localy and im pretty sure i want to do this... not to mention the fact that old 1980's Cylones, Typhoons, Mustangs, and hondas are running this on thier original fuel systems with no problems after a couple of years of use... our fuel systems are updated to withstand ethanol because most gasoline contains 10% ethanol now... so im pretty sure our fuel systems will be fine.

 

every octane of gas in my town contains up to 10% ethanol. it sucks bawls
