Extra Quart of Oil, Big Problem or Not?

Just changed my oil and mistakenly put an extra quart in. I checked the dipstick after 5 quarts, and it was still low, so the 6th quart got it just right.

I just checked the manual and saw that it said 5, and I want to know if this is a big problem or not. Should I go and drain a quart right now, or just check the dipstick every once in a while and see if it goes really high and then go from there.

from my research, too much oil than it is recommand will like flood your motor or something like that. i would drain some out just in case.

The ss/sc takes about 6.5 to be perfectly "full". I only ever use 6 tho 5 isn't enough

its a 6.4 quart pan IIRC. 5 quarts are for the L61/LAP/LE5/LNF (basically every other ecotec)

According to GM Service information the SS/SC take 6.3 Quarts of oil . I wish they would sticky this chart ....I've had to find it countless times to repost it.

To answer the question tho,

Too much oil can be nearly as bad as too little on an engine.

I use 6.5 quarts.

The ecotec is good about pushing out extra oil out the crankcase vent at the top. At the track guys try to add extra oil to prevent starvation on turns but a little too much will just get pushed out. I've seen it happen several times. The problem on a street car like the cobalt is the crankcase vent leads back to the air intake for better emissions rather than a catch can. So that extra oil goes shooting back into your engine *doh*

i have an 07 and it actually says 7qt. if we put it up high enough and let it drain while i eat dinner. 7 qts is perfect after i let it idle for a few seconds. but for a quick oil change i put 6.5qt in

A couple bad things about too much oil, one is you may have oil coming out of places you don't want , like dip stick tube. If you have a breather sytem you'll be puking oil out there.
You'll get a lot of windage, LSJ have oil sprayers that cool the pistons but too much oil splashing up the cylniders is not so good it may cause the oil to foam-up. Too much oil in the pan will increase pan pressure.

Too much oil causes a condition called oil aeration. Basically the oil becomes foam. When this happens you loose the oil support between the crank and it's bearing and you loose the oil support on between the rod bearings and the rods. Usually the rods go first. The results are spun bearings and major engine damage. If you are going to "stress" your engine then running 1/2 quart low is way better than running 1/2 quart high.
