Getting to 300 HP the right way...
Getting to 300 HP the right way...
Just bought an 06' Supercharged Cobalt yesterday, now I've been scouring the internet trying to figure out the best way to get my car to 300 HP (currently stock) without blowing anything up if you know what I mean. I've looked at the GM stage II kit which is very promising (to me who knows very little of these things) and also exhaust systems from the head back. If anyone could suggest a good relatively cheap FULL exaust system (mid header, downpipe, cat, exhaust) or your idea as an alternative it would be greatly appreciated. Please if your response is complicated simplify to I R BABOON.
300 is a nice feat to achieve on the M62 alone. Looks like a fun challenge ahead! Ebristol (I think is his name) is someone you should look up. Wasn't he the first to hit 300whp on the M62? Not too many LSJ's have made the 300whp mark on the stock blower.
i dont think Ebristol was the first to make 300hp on the m62 but he was one of them.
it can be done... id go with corn and youll need one hell of a tune and the right cooling mods.

start cooling mods first... can never go wrong with cooling. then start to heat that bad boy up. e 85 is a great power gainer and also helps run cooler. stage 2 is only gonna get you 250 hp roughly. go with zzp stage 3 with the 2.7 80lb injectors stage 3 front mount Heat exchanger and get tuned for E 85. then next if you have your cooling mods i would go stage 2 ecotech cams with 78lb springs and retainers. you will be in the 300 hp range no doubt in my mind.

The "right" way would be to build the motor as seen in the LSJ build book.
That may get expensive though....
The other way is E85, 80's, full exhaust, "good" tune.
A few members have made almost 300whp on 2.9 pulley & M62 with E85.

and for exhaust...i run a bad mab header with a 3 inch catless dp and a high flow resinator with a electric cut out. i spent 150 on a header 120 on a dp 30 for the resinator and 200 on the electric dump.
biggest baddest heat exchanger you can jam in there...
dual pass end plate
3" cold air intake
smallest pulley you can find
a five gallon bucket pouring E85 into a funnel for each cylinder to replace the injectors...
ZZP Longtube header and a 3" exhaust
and a helluva tune

It is no where near as hard to make 300whp with the M62 as it was years ago. Sometimes less is more, and most people that made big power focused on running the proper octane/fueling (E85), & the tune. You don't need a huge heat exchanger if running E85. Hell, you can run the stock cooling and be set. There is no proof a long tube makes more power than a shorty or midlength on our cars (in theory yes, but no real world proof). You don't need a super small pulley, one member made 291whp on a 2.9 & E85.
There are some exaggerations in this post....

1 cooling mods should be the first theing done to the car if you cant cool it you wont make it
2 get the exhaust done like staged said no proof which header makes the most power just stay away from the jbp noodle header it is garbage
3 get the fueling part taken care 80lb injectors if you cant feed it it wont make it
4 cams everyone over looks them a set of stg1 cams from zzp would get you realy close on pump and if you added water/meth then that would make it easier or just set the car up on e85 and drop the pully way down
5 get rid of the balance shafts
6 get a good tune on there none of the above wont work unless you have a good tuner
7 tvs or turbo if you dont want to stick with the m62
people making 291 on a 2.9 pully and e is bull **** they found a realy happy dyno
