Help with cam grind

Hey guys...

Blah blah, the guy with the Saab, blah

Anyways, I'm doing a 400whp build and I figured i'd come to you guys when it comes to things like CAMS. I'm not very good with figuring out cams, I know a few things about duration and lift, but not very much. I sent an email over to JBP today asking them about a cam grind.

The car is turbo, it's going to be using a GT3071R, valvetrain, forged rods/pistons, *cams*, and then headgasket/headstuds, 630cc injectors and the walbro 255lph fuel pump with 6-7gph of methanol injection. That's pretty much the meat of the build.

For reference, here is the stock cam profile for the motor:
Will this do it, Frosty?
http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/s...736&postcount=2

Intake 235 deg
Exhaust 240 deg

Ehhh, wait a minute. I got the WIS here. (In case you want to grind your own).

Intake lift 5.75544 mm
Intake open/close 14 BTDC / 41 ABDC

Exhaust lift 5.8703 mm
Exhaust Open/Close 47 BBDC / 13 ATDC

The above data is specific to the 2.0T.

The WIS also lists this spec, which appears to apply to all 4 cylinder motors:
Cam Lift, Inlet Valve 9.70 mm
Cam Lift, Exhaust Valve 9.90 mm

The difference between compressed tappets and expanded tappets is about 2 mm. So, I'm not sure where some of that cam data comes from.
What should I be looking for as far as a new grind?

I would guess that something like the 272 grinds some LSJ guys are using would be quite well suited for your turbo app, but I couldn't say for sure.

it's going to be custom tuned on the dyno by Nordic in a few months, we don't have HPT software for this ECU

The A/R of the turbo is 0.64, internally wastegated with a T3 turbine housing. I'm guessing the boost will be somewhere near 23psi

can you guys throw links at me?

stock cams will support a good amount over 400whp.... just look at my car.

on a gt3071 23-24 psi should put you where you want to be

ya know. id stick with the stock cams for as long as you can.

i wouldn't upgrade unless it becomes a flow issue across the head itself.

stock cams will support a hair over 475 crank and the stock head is good to abit over 500 so you should be in the clear

oh yeah lol. forgot saabs came with the correct setup from the factory

heads are the same, and I don't think the cam grinds could be too different from each other

I posted the stock cam grinds in the OP

I only have one chance really to get it tuned, the guy has to come from Sweden to do it.

The LSJ 272s are reground from LSJ cams with a wider LSA (preserved stock) then he would want. His LSA is a bit too tight for a 272 regrind imo.

I would say something similar to this. Slightly longer duration than stock for higher rpm use, near similar overlap with much better lift.
