how to time the engine

I am doing a top end build and NBS. I figured since im using NBS I dont need to worry about timing that chain.

My question is do I need all the specialty tools they use or can someone give me a easier way of doing it.

I believe the chain has colored marks that correspond with marks on the gears. Having the cam phasers properly clocked will be the toughest part although with no oil pressure I'd imagine they would return to 0* on they're own

Pick up the LSJ build book, and a shop manual.

I just timed my engine after my cam install a few months ago, so everything is fresh in my memory.

If you need any help, shoot me a PM.

Also to answer your question, you do not need the kent moore cam gear bracket like I used, but a kent moore or goodson spring compressor is a must for the valve springs.

No special tools are needed for the timing chain and timing the motor though.

the part that got me confused in the build book is where they want you to find the "sweet spot" where you go with .050" lift on either side of TDC. But that seems to be for adjustable cam gears...Is that correct

ok, thats what I thought...

how do i determine where the lobs are supposed to be when I put the cam gears on, or do they only fit into the gear 1 way?

Non adjustable (stock gears), have tabs that fit into the ends of the cams.

You will see what I mean when you pull them off the stockers.

After installing the gears, you will rotate the cams so the gears (@ TDC) match up with the timing marks on the chain.

ok, I wasnt sure how the cams went on the gears, so if they have a tab, it will be real easy..

Nice!!

Yep, they are easy man. They press right into the cams.

Make sure to place a drop of red loctite on the cam gear bolts, and hand start them to hold the gears onto the cam.

1. we don't have phasers in the lsj
2. on the lnf the phasers don't clock the engine times like an lsj
3. know what you talking about before you post

Do I need to time the neutral balance shafts, I figured not because the water pump shouldn't have to be in time with anything

nope, no timing needed on that waterpump/nbs chain. stick on, bolt up the tensioner, pull the pin.

I use red loctite on everything too. Just got to get a longer cheater pipe.

and the new hydraulic tensioner for the cam chain doesn't need any setting, just bolt in place and go correct?
