Thanks For The Help Guys!!!

UPDATE got it "working" tonight... check post 12 for more info

As many of you guys may or may not know im adding a second alt on my car for audio purposes (please don't ask why and spam this thread... if u have something to say about me adding that search for my other thread and flame there). I'm still having issues getting a correctly sized belt to make all this work so thought id ask you creative peeps for any ideas. The second alt has a pivoting bracket to act in place of the stock tensioner (pics in my gallery). I have an 80" belt and i need to take up at least 3" of space some how. After looking at the sketchup of our engine the best idea we had was to make an s bend with 2 idler pulleys to take up the slack in between the AC and supercharger. only problem is it hits the support beam along with the radiator hose (also gets real close to alot of stuff down there)

So any good ideas where i can tie up some belt space? If the stock alt wasn't clutched id get a bigger pulley for that but don't know how that would work with it being clutched

The way it's setup you should probably add a larger tensioner pulley and a larger pulley on the 2nd alternator if it's possible. Not sure if that will fix your problem however. I assume your using the 2nd alternator to charge a dedicated battery to run the audio stuff. Does anyone know what the performance decrease will be with running the 2nd alternator?

as said above, make the pulleys that dont do anything like the idler/tensioner bigger. Not sure how to go about doing this, but it would probably be easier than fabbing 2 more mounting points for 2 more idlers to make your S bend work

Just a though, but you could use a spacer behind the A/C compressor, bring it out a little, that might help.

To be honest this feels like a whole lot of work to do just about nothing but that's just me

Maybe you could raise the 2nd alternator higher? But then clearance issues with the hood.

if you removed the idler for a alternator, just run a stock belt and a smaller crank pulley....

(that's 5 nos)

That's the last place you want to find belt space. Besides...who makes a smaller lsj crank pulley.

...why wouldnt you want a smaller crank pulley....thats a common way to run an underdrive setup, and im sure two alternators, even with an underdrive setup, will power everything just fine
CED sells one, for example

??? ive never herd of such things before so i really don't know.... im an audio guy that's it

BUT tonight it is official we did the S bend so there's less coverage on the AC but it clears the engine bay. Car runs with second alt and everything. We also tested the ac to see what would go down if any slippage would occur and non seemed to happen. Now i have to put my vehicle back together and im ready to go

Thanks to all that helped and gave/ bounced ideas around I was really afraid this would turn into a flame war like the original thread and be a gigantic headache but I actually got useful info and stuff. Thanks again

there's no way to get a say, 77" belt, or a 76"? there's gotta be a belt out there with the same dimensions only shorter. i could be wrong though...

smaller crank pully, on a supercharged car

yup the one thing i really didnt expect was issues finding a belt. I mean there's how many different sizes shapes ect in stock at local auto parts stores? You would think almost anything could be specially ordered but i guess not

Either way i posted up some a pic of the lil S bend we had to do and a top picture in the original dual alt thread

dual alt setup... excellent. did you use a 2nd stock alternator? i would assume so, i haven't found any H.P. alts available for our balts. while i'm posting... what is the rated amperage of the stock alt? and what the hell are you pushing that requires 2 alts?! small cobalt interior + 3000+ watts = fun and games until your ears start bleeding =P

and hey, congrats on getting it running sucessfully. any pics of the install and/or perhaps a how-to?

no way in hell of a how to. This is by far one of the most difficult things i've done on my car and with such tight tolerances there's really no way to replicate it. My friend that did all the work is a badass welder and a badass fabricator.... he very much let me know even if someone paid him a good chunk of change he wasn't interested in doing this again

The second alt is a 200a ohio gen externally regulated alt. oh and my sundown amp is rated at 3000w rms at 14.4 at 18.8 that number does rise quite a bit
