do a leak down test.....bring the cyl to TDC of compression stroke and listen to where the air is escaping from, intake valves, exhaust valves, piston rings.....

u can reuse the cam cap bolts, i also reused my cam gear bolts, i kno they are torque to yield but i just loctited em. as for timing being off its unlikely with a holding tool if it was used properly. im guessing you werent at TDC and you also gotta make sure that all of your valves are closed while at TDC before you reinstall. it is a bitch to retime it without taking off the front cover. i had to set my gears, find the colored links and count the links between the colored ones. then line up the notches on the gears that many links apart from one another. should be 10 and 2 at tdc number 1 and 4 compression stroke. if this made sense then sweet if it didnt then sorry...

 

Timing this motor is cake. Hell, even building it is.
