the valve cover bolts are 71 ft/lbs. Not sure what else you need other than that.

nope, i was 100% serious took it right out of my haynes manual. I thought it was a little high too, bu a lot of the bolts in the engine have pretty high torqe specs.

I can't find them on the site yet, but I know they're on here somewhere. Do yourself a favor and go to the dealership and ask for a complete car torque specs printout. I have one at home and use it all the time.

On a side note, just some words of advice. I hope you are planning to resurface the cylinder head, are buying new headstuds and not using headbolts again, as well as getting a nice headgasket preferebly a Cometic one. If you don't have the head resurfaced at a machine shop, the gasket won't seat properly and it'll blow again. You cannot reuse the head bolts as they are torque-to-yield i.e. you can only use them once, and using another set of them is dumb anyhow when you can get headstuds instead. I'm just trying to give you a heads up here coming from someone that has done this already. Oh, and make sure you double and tripple check the timing upon reassembly so you don't destroy the engine. If you have any questions feel free to ask, but other than that good luck.

Hey, here is the link to the informational sticky I made on a headgasket install. The only thing new is that you can order a 2.0L headgasket from Cometic now instead of a 2.2L one.
There is a link for the torque specs thread inside of it. I told you it was on here!

71 inch pounds is less than 6 foot pounds. that sounds crazy low to me, that's pretty much hand tight.

i'm just going by what's in the book.

biggest thing for the head gasket is getting the timing perfect afterwards

well, if you know what you're doing it's fairly easy. I could have it done in a day easy. Sounds like you don't know much about working on cars, so I hope you have someone with some experience helping you. A cylinder head is a big job for a novice and there is lots of room to make expensive mistakes. Setting timing is very important. I've done a few cylidner heads on cobalts at work and they're pretty straight forward.

just double checked. for the 2.0 engine it does in fact say 71 ft pounds. for the 2.2 and 2.4 though it does say 89 inch pounds, which works out to be like 10 ft/lbs or so.

if you actually try and tighten them to 71 ft/lbs you might as well buy new bolts....and have a drill and easy out handy because you will snap everyone of them.....

Install the cover on the cylinder head and hand start the bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the camshaft cover bolts to 8 Nˇm (71 lb in).

i get that we all just keep saying the same thing over and over. i think that 10 ft lbs sounds MUCH more reasonable than 71.

Most of the stuff on the engine is in.lbs. Only the main things like the headbolts, rods bolts, etc are the only things that require heavy torqing. If you are using headstuds, follow the stud manufacturer's instructions instead of the factory ones for torqing.

Here is the link for all the torque specs since the original one I posted didn't show up:
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...t=torque+specs

Here is the link to the headstuds and gasket ordering sticky I made:
