Just got my used head looks like on the exhaust side the rockers made contact with the titanium retainers
Any reason this would happen?

the valves do rotate in the head btw. You can remove the rockers and surface grind them for clearance. Its a matter of thousandths of an inch. It only happens on the exhaust side.

I have found this happens if you put LNF new style rockers on an LSJ and why Supertech came out with a new spring package for LNFs. Based on what I have found and experienced, its not the end of the work; fix the clearance and you will be fine and the Ti retainers dont need to be replaced... at least on mine, the marks dont hurt. Yours look a little nastier than the ones I had but I dont know what else. Talk to Supertech if you wish they are really decent people to deal with and very knowledgeable.

supertech changed the spring I doubt they changed the retainer. Ya never know I didnt ask at the time. The issue with the LNF was two fold: the contact with the rocker, and the compressed spring having a larger compressed circumference than the head pocket.

The LSJ head has different architecture to the LNF, not just the inlet port angle and the DI injectors, but the spark plug surround boss has tent style structure, and the LNF is just open in that area.

So I dont know for sure, but I am guessing that the old LSJ rockers which were cracked at the pivot even when they were manufactured, were upgraded for the LNF. That leads to a retainer clearance issue I am thinking. And the casting for the LNF head was changed, maybe simplified for production ( I like the "look" of the LSJ head better but wtf do I know about casting structure? Nothing.) and the spring pockets evidently slightly smaller than the LSJ

all I know.

Also looks as if the springs don't clear the head pocket?

Do you happen to have any pics or examples of this in your vast database?

By what he was saying I'm assuming the flat bottom side, around the nub for the valve. Ill let him clarify though.

yup. Advise sent me a PM I will send piks and specs Monday. Maybe if I can do it myself, earlier, but I have lots of stuff to assemble and ship out so gotta take care of that first. And I be feeling lazy. And Roger the engine man I think for him, its last weekend for ice fishing...what a curious sport. Sit in a tiny shack over a hole in the ice, drink beer in the freezing cold, catch fish which are generally so small, you throw them back?....now thats a good time!.......

Anyone know what the clearance should be so I can check it when installed
Think I'm gonna have the machine shop cut the retainers

Weakening the retainers is probably not the best thing to do...

Agreed. Just looking at it from a structural standpoint, the rocket is a lot beefier than the retainer. It can lose a few thousandths without being affected like the retainer would be.

I'm going to contact supertech and see if I could get the 75lb springs and avoid both these issues
It is a manufacturing defect that that there too large for the spring pocket

if you run stock LSJ rockers it doesnt happen. NOT a defect and its not fair to say that. Your head does not have stock LSJ rockers and thats the root cause of the problem. My .02 c.
