Question for you Motor guys
How do you guys know where to put the timing chain on the cam gears and the crank gear? Not this summer but the next imma do some serious work to the cobalt and was wondering how you do that. Imma go JBP Stage 2+1 Head, and Diamond Pistons, JBP Rods, Hahn Turbo, BCP Tune. So i need to know how you get the timing right on our motor?

well you would have to find top dead center first if I'm not mistaken, then set the dampener to 0 degrees. There should be something on the timing chain or the cogs telling you where the cogs should be when engine is at top dead center. I could be wrong, but I did some engine work on my mustang having to find top dead center to set the timing. Should be the same, except 4 less cylinders.
i never looked at the lsj internals so I am not sure about the timing chain having colored links, but there should be something on there indicating where it should be at TDC
when in doubt, google

there is an lsj build book from gm
how to build your engine safely to 300hp, but then you gotta worry bout the tranny, our trannys suck *****.
eventually I may go turbo, but thats a few years from now. If you want to get 400+ hp, turbo is the way to go with these cars. Superchargers are worthless for 4 cylinder cars, they are better suited for v8s.

wow thats so far from the truth its not funny. the reason a turbo is the way to go is because the only thing car specific to a turbo setup is the manifold itself, everything else is universal parts. yes i agree our heaton m62 isnt going to get you over 300hp (by much at least), however with the more efficient blowers that are comming out for our cars (eaton tvs and twin screw) 400hp supercharged will be possible. and the best thing about a supercharger is instantanious boost, no lagging turbo

I could put you in touch with a place that could do a race ported head for a GRAND

There is arrows on the cam gears and crank shaft gear that you match up with certain color coded links on the timing chain
its not terribly difficult, just double/triple check to make sure its correctly time'd

The crank pulley has a mark on it for TDC, the cam gears have triangle markings that have to be lined up, and the cam gears can on go on the cams on way. Once the marking on the crank is at TDC, and the cam arrows are pointing as directed per the GM build book/manual, it'll all be lined up perfectly. Do a couple rotations on the crank to see it they all line up perfectly per the GM build book/manual and if it's all good put the tensioner to the right setting and install it. Real easy to do if you have two people handy. One dealing with the timing chain, and the other holding the cams with wreches in the right spot. There are also colored links as well on the chain but it takes a bunch of rotations to get them to line up on the specific spots and is more for building an engine outside the car. I hope that helps out a little.
See my headgasket and headstud sticky for the link to the build book I used for details.
