Rough Night!
Rough Night!
Another trip across the state to fulfill our addiction proved to be an exhausting night but worth it. The day started off great, the weather was nice and I was on time to meet Matt (wow). I should have known the day was going to be rough when traffic came to a complete stop for about four miles because the construction sign said the left lane was closed for the next two miles and there was no construction or closed lanes. If your friend jumped would you? I should have also known that you can’t go to the track twice with out any problems. We arrived at the track about ½ hour late, no big deal that’s normal. The first pass the plugs were beat so I replaced them and the car was back to normal. The second pass I went to shift into second and broke a shift cable, and the alternator quit working. I didn’t have either of the parts on the trailer, so I figured that my day was done, damn that’s a long drive for a couple passes. Matt and I knew we could swap the cables from the LNF to my car after he was done for the night but the alternators are different and all the part stores were closed by this time, so we were stuck, or were we? Matt (never give up) Meekhof remembered that his LS truck motor has a six rib alternator pulley so we robbed the pulley off of his truck and put it on his lnf alt and on my car, now that’s crafty. Lastly we swapped tires from the LNF to my car (mine were wasted), then the fan relay took a dump, we did have an extra relay. Finally I make a pass and the tires rubbed which killed my mph resulting in an 11.24 @ 124. We spaced them a bit more and the next pass was an 11.43 @ 128 missing 3rd. The third pass would prove interesting the car ran faster running an 11.32 @ 131 but seemed a little slow to respond between shifts, I figured it was just me. The last pass felt about the same but responded even slower between shifts, you will notice the bog in the video. Got back to the pit area and the car sounded funny and the alternator light was on again so I open the hood and realized that the blower, alt., and crank pulley weren’t spinning. I must have made the whole pass that way. I haven't had a chance to diagnose the problem but I am pretty sure I broke the keyway off the crank. I got to make a few passes next to a Honda that was trapping between 128-130mph, don’t worry I didn’t loose any of the races. I made sure to represent the Cobalts. Over all the day was long but I wouldn't change it and I set a new person best on the last pass setting the bar even higher running an 11.09 @ 132. Thanks to Matt for all the help, and all of you that support ZZP. Next year is going to be insane!

I don't think the blower was helping much because Ryan is severely traction limited with this setup. He makes mid 10 second power, but runs low 11s with relatively poor sixty foots. The blower would have helped between shifts and likely put his car in the 10s, but that's just speculation as we will never really know.

True, but if the blower is on the motor, and the bypass valve is closed, you need to have the blower spinning or it is a huge restriction. Would Ryan's car run faster ETs without the blower? Probably, as long as he launches with enough RPM to get into boost quickly. Would it be as fun on the highway? Nope. The blower is great for adding instant boost any time you step on the gas. Power under the curve would suffer if he removed the blower.
