shifting.

ok im new to driving a stick, and got my cobalt ss/sc about 2 months ago and ive got almost everything down except when im racing, i cant get my first to second shift smooth, any tips or tricks?

short throw. b&m or hurst

the stock shifter is just kinda ackward into second.

I never had a problem with the one-two shift. It was always the two-three shift that was an issue. A B&M or Hurst shifter will fix that problem though. It's a much better setup, and helps make sure you hit the right gears when you need to.

I don't have a problem shifting into 2nd, but I have to wait a second because the ratio of 1st and 2nd is so great. If I just fast shift between 1st and 2nd I spin.

I can't say I have ever had a problem with shifting to any gear but my advice is to think smooth not fast. Just work on getting a nice consistant shift from 1-2 then eventually the speed will come with that.
