Stage 3 Tune?

Hello, I recently purchased an 05 LSJ and was told it was stage 3. at higher rpms its will cut out at time as if it is running too rich or something of that sort. Pretty new to these cars & was wondering what the best option for tuning would be and not too pricey.

Thank you!

HP Tuners will do the job. Is it too pricey? That is based on your definition of pricey.

2 credits will allow you to do your own car. If nothing has changed, 6 credits will allow you to do all same model year cars.

HPT has a website that will help you through the process.

ZZP has other tuning options as well, if buying HPT and tuning credits is out of your price range. Basically you tell them the list of mods, they write the tune, and you have the choice of sending your ECU to them, buying a new one, or paying a core charge and they will send you an ECU and you send the old one back and get a refund. Altough, I do highly recommend HP Tuners, because that will allow you more options for who you use to tune your car, then you can have ZZP or what ever tuner you choose do the tuning and send the file to you via email and you just upload and datalog. Also for LSJ Tuning, to datalog AFR with HP Tuners you need HPT Pro with pro link and an aftermarket AFR guage such as AEM or other AFR guage that allows you log with HPT. Here are a few links to some of the things I mentioned.

Before worrying about the tune go ahead and pull your spark plugs to check condition and gap.

Well, do you know who's stage 3 set up it is? There are many vendors who each offered their own variation of a Stage 3.

yes this is always a good idea too, I some times forget not everyone starts fresh with every car. First thing I have done with every used car I have bought has been basic tune up stuff.

After checking plugs, you need sort out what mods have been done, and its possible that the car had more mods before being sold and was never retuned, but like he sai dchek your basics, spark plugs can tell you alot.

It is the ZZP Stage 3 kit. I have checked everything but spark plugs lol. It also has a meth kit in which I have not installed yet because I am new to these cars and don't know much about hooking that up. Would you recommend putting that on before tuning it? I bought the HPT with 2 credits.

You'll love HPT, there is a lot you can do, and a lot you can learn. Also the HPT Forum is pretty help with some information. Did you get pro or just standard?

For the tuning side, you may be able to contact ZZP, give them the VIN they might still have the tune on file, I would guess. I don't know if they will give you the tune update price, which I think is $40, or since if since its a different owner they might charge the full tune price about $110. If you use ZZP, Al McClure is pretty good at what he does. Either way, when you talk to the tuner let them know you have meth kit thats not installed, they may write you an initial tune, to get right before you install the meth kit and start tuning for meth after the car is running is good, but that should all be discussed with the tuner you choose.

Like viper said, whoever tunes you will likely want to get a baseline configuration before adding methanol. However, I would suggest to go ahead and install the methanol kit and make sure it works but just leave it turned off until the tuner is ready. Idk how ZZP does it but from my experience with over-the-internet tuners is you'll make much quicker progress if you can get as many sessions as possible in while the tuner is available so it's good to have everything ready to go.

I would also recommend replacing and properly gap your new spark plugs before starting the tune regardless the condition of the current plugs. Post up a picture of the tips of your plugs in order relative to the cylinders you pulled them from. Look for any inconsistencies between cylinders.

You wont be able to log the wideband easily without pro, which I dont recommend WOT tuning without a wideband being logged.

I like having access to my own HPT, so I'm not waiting on anyone to help me. If you have access to it and he doesn't mind you using it you could use his to data log, as you don't need to use credits to log, you only need to use credits to unlock the ECU.

On the topic of data logging, along with HPT Pro, you also need a to have a compatible wide band that will allow you to log the AFR.
