timming chain tensioner

Herd a weird rattle come n go in the last 2weeks from the topish/backside kinda lol, so I did a search on here. Looks like thats what my prob is. I ordered from crate engine depot, is it just a matter of removing the bolt and replace with this? Is this the cause of my weird decel noise I here when im in a tunnel aswell? Ive herd this weird rattle only twice and once I turn car off and restart it goes away. Any more insite or look outs on what im about to encounter as soon as the part comes in would be great guys. Thanks

most likly what it is, just use a 32mm or 1 1/4" socket to remove it, screw in the new one and you're good to go, many how to's are on the old tensioner design, no need to "pop" this one, so the valve cover can stay on

Its the same size socket that is used to get the oil cap off. Make sure you get all the pieces of the old tensioner out. Make sure you new one is set in the right position before you put it it or you wont be able to tighten it down. I took my valve cover off just to make sure the tensioner set in right. Might be a good idea to take it off just so everything goes correct. Other than that enjoy not having a loud ruckus coming from your engine bay

I've seen so many threads on this. Does the new one need to be set any special way or not? Some say you just throw the bitch in there, others stress that it needs to be set or something. Seeing as how I did my supercharger coupler and oil a week ago that stopped most of my ruckus under the hood, and I ordered my tensioner bolt so I would like this clarified also.

Finally I will have a quiet motor.. *knock on wood* Hahahaha

You can take it out and put the new one back in if you really want. People just take the valve cover off to be 100% sure the tensioner set right and is fully extended.

there has been a few designs on theses tensioners, the old design needed to be "set/sprung"
the new one, there is no need

The old one comes out in 1 piece? Or multiple? I swore even Maven, and a few highly respected others, on gmsc said that the new tensioner must be set also.

the newest design is just a screw in piece, it can't be taken apart like the previous versions. well, not easily. The old ones had a ball, spring and the little piston. The new one is a sealed unit. crateenginedepot.com has the newest design

The old ones usually come out in one piece, but can fall apart if you arent careful

No one told me this and I changed mine to the new style last night. I pulled it back out after having it in to look at it again to figure out how to set it, but it had already been set. I spent the next hour fighting the spring, trying to compress it enough to get some of the threads to catch. finally got it and all seems to be good with it, so we'll see.

You to have to have it set in the correct position when you put it in or else your gonna fight trying to get it threaded.

I had it completely installed, in the correct position. Then I took it out to look at it again, I didn't know they automatically set, I was under the impression that I had to manually set it..

I also wasted a lot of time pulling the valve cover haha. Oh well it's done now. Live and learn.

If you buy an autozone replacement, it can also fall apart... ask me how I know...

I was a couple hours from home it was either autozone or drive home on the bad one.. (the original one had re-locked in the install position it sounded like it was going to sling the timing chain..lol)
