trying to decide what block

Alright simple question. What block should I go with. I made 644whp with my last one before it granaded. I am really wanting to know what the gen3 2.0 is good for? Do people sleeve them or what are they good for with the factory sleeves with just better rods and pistons? Trying to decide between this or a girdled lsj block. I want to back the power down at first and work my way back up.

I don't think anyone has pushed the Gen 3 block to distruction that I know of. But its much better than the Gen 1 block. Don't think you have anything to worry about weakness wise in the Gen 3.

Gen 3 blocks don't have sleeves. But I know Mongorat on here sleeved a Gen 3 with Mrbelvedere's sleeves. Overkill kinda, but incredibly solid.

I cannot argue this point I dont know enough about it but I asked japeater why he chose his block and this was his answer:
" a sleeved and fully closed deck gen 1 IS THE STRONGEST ECO BLOCK COMBO THAT HAS EVER LIVED AND WILL REIGN AS BULLETPROOF UNTIL PROVEN OTHER WISE"

Well for sure. A girdled block is stronger than a partially supported one. It's also a lot more money. Like 2% of the Cobalt community actually NEED a girdled block though.

Hell if he made 644 before sounds like he needs the strongest thing possible

Did anything ever get done with that sleeved gen3? 2.1???

Well I need something good. Yes I will turn it down to start with but knowing myself I'll probably turn it back up. Stock lsj block at 644 equals this

Yaaaa no support up top will do that lol. I've done the same just not quite that bad haha. Personally I think a Gen 3 will serve you just fine. But the block is so new that no one has really pushed it to failure. If it even will. But I know a couple guys have done 600+ builds on here with it.

mongo did not use my sleeves he copied the work I done that's why I haven't posted pics of the new sleeves that are in testing

the gen 3 is supposed to be good up to 700hp is what I was told don't know if its true or not

Damn I'm impressed the stock LSJ block with just rods and pistons took that type of cylinder pressure for a while, because IIRC you were on some pretty high boost with a 6262 and stock head ports. After running like 500whp for quite a while I believe.

I'm running the ZZP girdled Gen 3 2.1L in my car at 600whp. Holding up fine so far, but I'm not sure how far a stock Gen 3 2.0 will get you, as Blue said it is fairly new so there haven't been too many high hp builds on them stock yet. MrB also makes a nice sleeve that replaces the factory Gen 1 sleeves that have seemed to do well, and I believe he is updating them.

Thanks for all the info. I just want to get the best. And I don't enough about the gen 3. I've searched and searched for proved results. But being how high HP cobalts are hard to come by its difficult to see the results of everyone's build and trying to figure out which block I should go with.

the zzp closed deck went 898whp on stock sleeves and I have resleeved 2 of them so far due to worn out bores but I would not have any problem running a gen3 block and pushing it either but you need to figure out how much hp is enough

Ah **** I didn't know that.

Cmiller on here built a real stout set up with the Gen 3 block. But hardly had any miles on it and he parted it out. Would have been nice to see him push it.

The best is a girdled block with Mr.B's sleeves.

Nick, you need to finish your stuff up and get on the dyno! You are a girdled Gen 1 correct?

that's why the new sleeve pics are not being posted and I would agree my sleeves and a zzp block is awsome

So your saying a gen 3 with just pistons and rods should be good for awhile? I'm not going to go much higher than 650 if I even go more.

No one on here will be able to say yes definitely. But zzp states the stock short block is good for over 500whp in it's stock form. Add good rods and pistons and who knows how far you can go. It's hear say and guesses from there. But it's a very stout block.
