Why purchase a 2.5 catback?

Just something I'm curious about.

Why do people go out and spend $400-$1000 for a 2.5 catback when you could essentially just do the over axle replacement piping/muffler and get a 2.5 for much less?

I understand lack of knowledge about it, especially with cti now gone, but besides that is their a particular reason? Somehow more gains?

A catbeck doesnt necessarily gain you much horsepower on our cars. A straight through muffler will net you less restriction and wont weigh as much as the lunchbox ( stock exhaust ) thats currently on the car.

Better money can be spent in a header/downpipe combination.

l would have to disagree with you on that to a point an m62 a muffler swap is plenty for most but a tvs car a good mandrell bent 2.5 would be plenty for most but for some a 3in would be needed

Have u ever seen the size of the inlet at the resonator on the stock catback?

If not, it's 2 1/16" i.d. ....

An over axle/muffler swap won't do much, unless u remove the main restriction.

Regardless, u can gain up to 10 whp with a good catback. It's not much per dollar, but it will help when u decided to mod more.

oh yea ive seen it and giggled about it but for someone who isent worried about being heavily modded a muff swap is plenty but the stock muffler is worse then the resonator

Yeah, stock SS/TC muffler is better than stock SS/SC muffler. It has a straight through design, even though it is still a big lunch box style muffler.

Would be nice for those wanting stock look with a little more flow.

See, that's why I asked. Never knew about the stock resonator.

So in theory, replacing the stock resonator would actuall net powwwaaaaaa?

yes to free of the catback for power replace the res and muffler, but that still leaves the header and downpipe, iv heard some people have made ok power while still on stock header so it may not be as restrictive as the rest of the system but they are still gains to be had by upgrading the whole thing.

I already got header, catted downpipe, over axle piping and muffler, so basically leaves my only restriction as the resonator. Pity lsjs sound like ass, be so easy to just do a resonator delete.

Ya, thing is I love the cars sound now. (I meant LSJs sound like ass no resonator) Thats why I'm iffy. Cars already quiet (I'm on a dynomax super turbo muffler). I dunno if I want to make it even quieter with the ZZP one.
