ZZP cam problems

Hey guys

I am not quite sure what is going on with my head. Here are the specs:

LSJ head
Supertech 75lb springs
LNF rockers
Stock lash adjusters
ZZP stage 2 came

Got the valves, seals, springs in fine no problem. Dropped in the adjusters, rockers and cams. Tighten cams as per spec

Now the cams will turn but it seems they too large? They start to turn and just stop. It looks like the valve springs are almost fully compressed and the lobe isnt even close to bringing the valves to the full open position.

Cams are installed in the correct bank as per the inscribing.
Timing chain is off, and the valves are not hitting the pistons

I am at a loss

how do you know the valves are not hitting the pistons? If you have the head bolted down and the timing chain is off.......if you have some pistons at tdc, then the valves are going to hit

When I had the head off I rotated the engine so all the pistons are even in the middle of their stoke. Also if I put a long screw driver down the plug holes it goes in the same length in all 4 cylinders

Yep this. Measure the base circle of the cams. Stock is 1.180". Serveral on here including myself have incorrect cut cams and the base circle is larger pushing the valves down. I just sent mine back today.

But you said it's pushing them to the full open position at TDC? That's not right. Even with the cams being out of spec.

I can't even get the valves to open all the way. I think the springs are fully compressed and that is why the cams won't move any more

I call them up tomorrow. Thanks guys

you want to have .040 or more clearance between the spring coils when at full lift you can check with a feeler guage also did you lubricate the cam bearing journals and associated valve train parts when rolling over roll slow and measure as you go

Yikes.... I can't believe the number of S2 cams that were ground wrong.

I hope everyone with this issue gets the problem resolved, and sent new (correct) cams.

It's appearing several cams were done with .020 too large of base circle.
It is not enough to cause valves to hit pistons and in many cases the cars run but are down on power as the valves don't fully close.

We're working on the issue and taking care of customers as reported. We're measuring all the cams from here on out before shipping them.

To the OP, if you can't turn the motor over, it's possible you have coil bind in the springs. Even if you change cams and correct that issue, running that close on coil bind isn't safe. It would mean that you are less than .020 from bind.

I'm going to bump this thread. I just swapped out my ZZP Stage 2 supercharged cams back to stock. I measured the base circle on the ZZP cams, and it was indeed about .020" larger than spec. I will be in contact with ZZP, I am not overly mad or complaining, I understand these things happen. Hopefully we can get these exchanged quickly.

Thanks for posting and helping the others who were unaware of this. I probably would never have known otherwise.
