2.2 airbox

ok heres the story. when i got my cobalt in august of 05 i wanted to to go to the track and get a couple of baseline numbers before modding. i ended up going in april of 06. my first three runs(all i got in that day..it was packed) were 15.7, 15.8, and 15.6. pretty damn good i told myself. quite a few people said the same. i was ver impressed with the stock times. about a month later i put a short ram intake on the balt and off to the track again. this time it sucked. similer reaction and 60' but from there just downhill. only on run hit 15.9. all of the rest (11 more that day) were 16.2 16.1 16.3 and one really bad 16.9. then took of the short ram a few days ago and put the stock piece back on but not the box. just the cover part. the plenum i thinks it called. and a small tube with high flow cone filter and MAF inline. reset comp adaptives and road around a bit and off to the track again 16.4, 16.1, and 16.5 again....okay mad now!!!
my question is do any of you 2.2 balts guys or gals have the stock airbox without the silencer that you would let go cheap because i had to cut out the plastic around the MAF in order to hook up my sri PLEASE HELP!!

sorry for the long as hell post

thanks --ted

personally i would change it to a CAI. right now your getting a lot of heat soak from the engine so its doing alot for u compared to a CAI. you will get more response and HP do to the cold air. right now im working on that and makin my cai into a ram air. im going to have some piping off the filter run to the middle grille between the fog lights and suck all the air in when im driving.....check it out

Keep us updated. I'm looking at going the custom intake route and a "how to" for a CAI or Ram Air would be awesome.

I ran short ram for a few weeks after i got my CAI.

One day i decided to convert to CAI, and I will never go back to short ram.

It was like waking my car up lol

Just thought I'd bring this up. You say you went back a month later and ran slower times. It could just be the conditions that slowed you down. Hotter, moister air will slow you down.only way to be sure would have to done the mod that same day you were there.

So don't be too quick to head back to stock.

Almost 2k on my injen and no CEL, yet!

I'd try the CAI setup first and then make a decision!

the stock air box is quite easy to take out. im workin on a cold air intake that keeps the stock air box. but im also gonna make it into a ram air. there is pipin in the air box that goes down to somewhere in the car( that gets smaller). im goin to extended it with a bigger whole to fit a filter. then ill have pipin for a ram air goin to the middle grille of our car. so alot of air gets in. but from the pipin in the stock air box im gonna make a bend pipin to go from there into the throttle body. ne of u guys have some thoughts...i think i will not throw and CEL's like some of those aftermarket CAI's. it should work better for only like less than 100 bucks. im doing it on thursday

that was my first one that i tried. it sucked just so you know. i took off the bumper cover and removed intake silencer and extended the intake tube and put on a cone filter and took out the stockfilter in the box above. it sucked!! (<--no pun intended)

i just did my custom cai. works amazing. i just kept the stock air box at the engine and ran tubin down to a k&n filter which the ss/sc uses for there air box mod. sounds totally different and handles better and there is a def gain in HP. not sure how much buts its noticable. i will be makin it into a RAM air soon.

ok i am so confused on how it handles better. if any of you guys know about intercoolers, the tubing for those are kept as short for those as possible. with lots of piping, it lowers the psi the compressor makes. i would think it would be the same for us n/a guys. kinda like wiring the system in your car. the longer the wire, the more resistance. but if you guys find something solid, pass it on. i am trying to avoid cia. right now im thinking about just usinq a k&n drop in.

no dont avoid a CAI. so easy to install. so worth it. im doing a ram air possilby on sunday. and builin a box in front of the radiator to ssuckall the air in from the front middle grille between the fog lights...the k&N filter wont do anything. our stock intake..is sooooooooo restrictive is not even funny. when i took it out..i almost cried its so ugly...lol. get a cold air...a SRI will develop a lot of heat soak so u wont get al ot of gains that you want. ill try to get a sound clip of my car...

if ur trying to avoid CAI go with an intake that can become short ram.. i know AEM can become one, i think injen and fujita can too...
