J-43655 is a J-Tool for holding cam gears. It's a ghetto way way of doing what you tried to do with zip ties. Personally, I still prefer to just pull the front cover and time it correctly. I feel a lot better seeing all 3 marks lined up, and knowing it's 100% correct.
I've had some people have no issues with that J-Tool, and I know of a couple that had motors out of time.

Using the proper factory specified special tool is the "ghetto way"???
Thats the first Ive heard of that.
If you use the J tool [properly, you will not have any issues. Ive done many cam swaps and on car spring/seal replacements, with this tool, under the pressure of GM warranty time, and have as of this date, (knock on wood ) NEVER had a comeback.

Only point I was trying to make was, if you don't have the tool... No need to spend extra money when all you need to do is pull off the front cover.

Looks like a turbo manifold in the first pictures, but if its a header...wow.
Exactly. When I put vehicles in time. I always used this method, and took extra time if needed even if I was not getting paid to make sure I didn't get a yo-yo.
I will admit, I only know of 2 people personally that have had issues. One of them was actually at a dealer (hence why when the tool failed, or was used wrong, they replaced his pistons and valves). I wasn't present for either, so I don't know if they did it wrong, or what.
