Post coolant temp sending unit???

hello i recently bought a autometer coolant temp gauge, i w\have it all wired up and every only the sending wire is left, right now i am using the sendng unit to tell me the ambient engine bay temp , cuz idk where to stick it at, i was gon put it in place of the stock, but when i unplug the stock one the fan kicks on and the cluster reads -40 degrees, is there anywhere else i can put it at? maybe the coolant resevoir? upper radiator hose?

ps-dont give me no why'd u get a temp gauge when you have a digital one ****, cuz i dont feel having the dam thing set to coolant all the time, i like to keep it at my mileage
