Differences in 2.2L if any??

What differences are there if any through the years in the 2.2L ecotec engine? What parts will interchange from prior years (cams, pistons, rods etc.) to the 2008 model? I am asking because I'd like to install a ported head but cannot find any info on who makes a ported head except for Patriot Performance and they say that the ported head they offer is for the earlier years and not compatible with my '08 2.2L. I'd like to make a 200hp n/a build with my car and was wondering if it were possible and if so, some vendors that could help me out. Thanx for any tips/pointers!!

So what about ported heads/aftermarket cams? I called Allecotec performance and they said that there are no cams that will work with the 07 up engines yet. . .

I wonder where this sensor plugs in at? I also wonder how hard it would be to machine a Comp Cam to accept this sensor?

Should be at one end of the head, probably three wires(power, signal, ground) or two wires(power, signal, internally grounded). It may look like a crank position sensor, not sure, I dont really have experience with 07-08's.

There is currently NO performance camshaft set available over the counter for the 07/08 L61.
You can use the exhaust cams that are out for the 2.2, but the 07/08 L61 uses a unique camshaft with an integrated reluctor sectin for the camshaft position sensor that is mounted the front drivers side of the head. Also due to this CMP sensor provision early style(00-06) L61 heads will not work with the 07/08 engine control system.(the head works fine, but you cant use the factory computer)

If you look at the valve cover, you will see that the intake side is longer by about 3/4" of an inch at the transmission side of the cover, that is where the magnet ring is housed. Directly beneath that is a plastic bracket with a couple screws in it, that is the sensor housing. Connected to the plastic bracket is the plug that goes to the computer. I just snapped pics and if needed i'll upload them.

There ARE Cams for the 07. However, there is a process that most shade tree mechanics will not be able to do. In order for it to work, the mag ring needs to be pressed off, then pressed on to the new set of cams. There is a set of Cams where the intake Cam is extended to make it possible for the mag ring to press on to. Then the intake cam needs to be shortened for proper fit. It's been done

https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-2l-l61-performance-tech-45/2007-cams-122345/

Comp Cams sell Cam kits for the 07 Cobalt 2.2. I just got off the phone with them. Here is the series line up.

Mild starting at 2500Rpm, no tuning needed 113200 $479.63
Wild starting at 3000Rpm, Tuning a must 113300 $479.63
Turbo application, Tuning a must 113150 $479.63
Blower Grind, Tuning a must 113250 479.63

All the intake cams are longer to provide provision for the cam position sensor installation, and it has to be done professionally to ensure that the cam is balanced right, the sensor is in the right place, and that the cam is shortened after install of the mag ring.

I took a peak at the link you provided regarding the cams Khaos, i didnt notice anywhere in that thread where it was officially stated that the reluctor simply presses on the new camshafts, it actually seems more like there was actually a significant amount of machine works performed by Bates Engineering. Any info on this? Is this a cam designed to take the press on reluctor wheel or is it simply a matter of the cam happened to have enough material that the skilled machinsists at Bates were able to create a a bespoke prodcut for a paying customer, it seems like that to me.

Well, that goes without saying. The mag ring on the stock cam can be pressed off, now about the exact dimensions of the new cam i'm not sure of, i'd have to have one in my hand to put the micrometer to it and check it along with the mag ring. At any rate though, it was very light machining to turn down to "correct diameter" for a nice 0.002-.005" press fit, if it was even necessary. However, the length did have to be trimmed in order for it to fit.

When i was on the phone with Comp Cams, they said that those Cams were for the 07 models and where designed to be a bit longer for the wheel. That is what i gathered out of the conversation. Feel free to get some more information, i'd love to hear about it, i'm just a bit too busy right now to go researching it further, plus buying new cams right now is a bit far off.

Yeah Ill be giving them a call, but I am of the opinion that these are the same old 1st gen cams designed for intake mounted power steering and its just a happy circumstance that the reluctor wheel fits on the now unused last journal of the 06 cams, and then you simply cut them down, I actually cant believe that Comp is recommending lopping off the end of the cam like that. I'll be having stock cores reground I think. Unless my suspsicions regarding these "07" cams are wrong.

Every L61 engine up through 2006 was basically identical. In 2007 and up, they changed the head to accomodate all of the things people are talking about above. The basic big change was they switched from a compression sense ignition system that had no cam position sensor to a Coil on Plug system that does. All of those changes where incorporated in the new head and cam design. The bottom end is unchanged.

If you want head work, the best thing you can do is have your current head get a P&P job done to it. Any performance machine shop can do a P&P job to any head.
