Eco cavy swap

so in order to put everything together in an easier fashion, and for tuning purposes...

what about swapping an eco cav motor? More aftermarket support; but I have an 07 Cobalt Base manual everything. What systems are going to be effected? I mean, I don't even have ABS. What could go wrong? Any input?

Different ECUs but everthing should physically bolt up fine. Just a lot of wiring for the cavy computer.

I would say its not worth the expense and effort to do it. The motors are basically the same. The only difference is that you have a cam sensor, maf sensor, and individual coil packs. As far as tuning goes now that the LS2 edit and trifecta have tuning for the 07 its not going to cost you anymore to tune it either. As far as aftermarket parts go anything you can get for the cavi you can get for the cobalt. Just my 2 cents.

the whole purpose of doing the swap in the first place is to leave the motor out in the garage and build it. I'm plan on doing A LOT, so, it is worth it to me to drive my car and build my engine at the same time.

physically the swap should go fine...have no idea how that would go eletronically

I know of an 05 Ion that ran a Cavi motor but kept our ECU and swapped TB's, kept MAF, etc. and was fine

I'm also running a Cavi head on my car with no issues.

I guess if you swapped everything over - block, TB, ECU, harness it could work but since there were some changes made in 07 I don't think you'd be able to run a pre 07 longblock and keep your electronics.

yeah they started making some changes since the cav ecos. hell the 08s are the new GEN II block. also think 07's had the coil packs. There's a few other diferences...... if you do a lil research you can find them.

Yes I know the GenII differences... I know it will structurally fit I am just talking harness wise here. I think tuning would be easier and overall the build will be easier plus there is more aftermarket support. than I also need to swap a F35, yata yata yata.

(400whp LS balt.. coming wayyy later)

EDIT: I plan on getting a COMPLETE pull out, from a 03-05 cav. I have a guy that gets them periodically for 500. I would keep my current motor post swap for a reserve.

Tuning will be no different as you'll have to use the same ecu thats in the car now. BTW I see you are from louisville....are you the guy with the black ls thats been to the valley and on 502streetscene.net?

i don't think thats gonna work dude, you're a year to late

unless you plan on swapping ignition setups and ECUs and going to a throttle cable I don't see how that would work. of course I'm sure you'd be fine just building up any Eco short block though but if you're looking for a longblock might as well look for an 07.

Ignition setup and ecu change, YES. LIKE I SAID I would rather tune the ECU from a cav w/HPT. Granted we have the fancy new secondary intake and new fuel management but it is so much easier to tune and build the cavy ecotecs. I mean, everything should hook up. I can deal with a CEL.

p.s.- Yes I am on 502ss on with the black LS coupe, who be you?

EDIT: And I can go with a rollback system, TB is in the same place. HPT is just FTW, since I have access to it and the older eco blocks are CHEAP

Your honestly getting into more headaches then its worth. I don't even know if you could make the ecu from the cavs work in a balt. You do know the 07's are tunable don't you?

yes, i know that. If I can get an 07 as cheap as an 03-05, I will use it. LMK if you could get one. And as far as using the ECU on an 03 for an 03, there should be no headaches. Thanks guys, just got some info from someone that is actually knowledgable, no problem with the swap.

You cant just bolt in an early L61 into a late L61 car. The harnesses are different, and the ECM fom a latemodel car cant run an early engine and vice versa. Early L61's are waste spark/7x crank engines, late L61s are COP spark/58x crank engines.

Youd have to swap over the whole engine(trans too if auto) harness/ECM and possibly replace the BCM. You wont pass inspection and obviously youll lose warranty on the ECM ,all engine/trans related harnesses, the engine and all its sensors, vehicle thef deterent and all system controlled or monitored by the BCM
