Engine knock
hello...... the other day the engine started to knock on my wife........so heres how it went sunday i drove the car it ran good nothing wrong know oil light or anything....she drove it monday night and everything was fine no lights again.....tuesday night she called me while going to work she was half way there....said it was making a slaping noise....the way she made it sound was it was a peice of plastic or something flaping in the wind... i told her to just go to work (another 15min away) and i would look at it in the mourning....after work her friend checked the oil and nothing on the dipstick......again no oil light was on.... we change the oil around 5k miles......have had no problems up to this point... so they got some oil and put in it... the knock they was hearing was gone since the put the oil in it......as she drove home it got a little worse.... so its sitting in the drive way while i figure out what i should do lol........ im thinking its a rod but can anyone help me diagnose it.....im not sure where the oil went?
as far as i could tell theres no oil in the gravel where the car gets parked and i have never noticed it smoking like that or smelled it for that matter...if its a rod bearing can those be replaced while motor is in car etc...... im just
havnt really looked at it because did i say im
its just a stockl61 06 ls.....

How many miles? Mines at 111k and starting to burn a little, I've never notice it while driving but it's not leaking and my shopforman was behind me one night and told me it puffs a little when I first start it up.
Your probably burning it off, as far as the noise, if it's bottom end noise it's more then likely a rod bearing and your gonna need a rebuild.

you can replace them, yes. but if the bearing spun and scored the crank, you're gonna want to take it out and buy a new crank if that is the case
also my guess is that you spun a rod bearing

Dude, I had a car one time come in with a leacking front timing cover. I replaced the gaskets, did the service, blah blah blah. Long story short when I started the car on my lift it ran for 30 seconds, then locked up. No knock, no noise, no sign anything was wrong. After tearing it down to see what exactly gave up we found a main bearing had spun. Car showed no signs, just bam, done. On the other hand I have seen car with rod knock type bottom end noise run for what seems like forever.
There's no rhyme or reason to it. If your lucky you can have bearings slapped in and call it a day. I would expect to have to do at least a short block (as long as the top end isn't damaged due to oil starvation) as car as doing it in the car... No idea.

in my experience if a rod is knocking the crank is already done. never seen one that could just be polished if it was knocking. the rod journal will be out of round, and usually the connecting rod is trashed too. any repair will involve removing the crank and affected connecting rod. thats if it is a rod knock.
All i can recomend, because ive never done a full rebuild. Is Take the chain case cover off, vavle cover and timing chain tensioner. Before a bottom end overhaul . Just imo
I took my oil pan off awhile back, and it looks like quite a bit of fun under there

i have a quick question... im about to pull the motor and check it out....if the motor is totally toast what motors is a easy swap.....if i can save it and the crank is just bad what crank do i need.... its a 06 ls 2.2 5spd..... i know this is old post but just getting around to pulling the motor
If you haven't pulled the motor yet, I would recommend a stethoscope or a long screw driver with a rubber handle like i do lol
This might help to diagnose where the sound is coming from and if it is a knock ..good luck and keep us posted

so i need a 05 or 06 2.2 l61 but does it have to be out of a cobalt? im pulling the motor hopefully sometime this week and will figure out what the damage really is....... also what all electrical connectors do i need to take off from the back side of the car? i think i got everything disconnected from the front side.....
05-06 L61 motors have a 7x reluctor on the crank. From what I understand that is the biggest difference from other L61 blocks when it comes to motor swaps. So yes, you have to get the 05-06 year model to make sure your sensors work with your PCM. You can get a motor out of any car in that year range that has an L61. Malibus and HHRs also use L61s but Im not sure if both of those fall into that year range. Check Car-part.com as they usually have a pretty good listing of parts in whatever area you chose. Im not entirely sure, but you may have to have your PCM reflashed from a dealership in order for it to work. If you do, its not a real big problem. My dealership charges $100 for it. Just make sure that you keep all of the wires nice and tidy when pulling and putting in the motor. The wiring on these cars is kinda fragile and will end up causing you far more headache than its worth should you pinch one.
