Gas Tank Problem

Hey guys. Friend has 06 2.2L Sedan. When he fills up the car he can smell gas until 1/4 has been used. Then after that he is good. No CELs no performance loss. He fills up again next week and smells gas again. He took it to the dealer and they said the tank is cracked where the filler tube connects to the tank. They want $500 for the tank and $230 for the fuel pump. He has to replace the fuel pump because when you take it out to put in another tank you break the seal. The fuel pump, sending unit and seal is all one piece. Labor is $180. He's looking at $910 bill. My question is there any way to seal where it's cracked? It must be real small because Im assuming fumes are escaping. Why can't the dealer repair the tank itself? I'm assuming its made of metal.

Any help would be appreciated. He has time to make up his mind, because they told him it'll be 2 months to get a gas tank. (special order part)

Anyone have a quick how to on replacing the gas tank/fuel pump?

Im assuming: Drain tank, remove straps holding tank, disconnecting lines and its out, right? Then we can get access to fuel pump to remove it and put it on the other tank and then reverse assembly.

Does the tank have a drain plug?

First off, there's a recall on the fuel pump. They should replace that for free. But even then, just because the seal is broken doesn't mean you can't reuse the original fuel pump. It's resealable. The tank is made of plastic, so I don't know what kind of crack it is, but you could do a temp fix with jb weld or something if need be.

Here's a picture of what the fuel tank looks like. The thing at the bottom coming out of it that looks like a weiner is where the filler tube connects to the tank. So I don't see how it could be cracked right there.

thanks for the info. The dealer looked up the vin# and there wasn't any recalls on his car for the fuel pump. They said it was only certain cobalts. As for the filler tube crack, dealer said its cracked where the rubber hose connects to the tank. I told him about the jb weld. He didn't seem to happy about it, but will prob be the way he should go. So my question is, the seal and the fuel pump aren't 1 piece? So it can be bought separately?

THe seal is resealable. As long as you keep the o-ring and don't throw it away or drop it in the tank.

No, I think he just went over 60k miles. I called around town for a used tank and found one for $100. Imma let him know, maybe we can swap it ourselves. Doesn't seem too hard thanks to scottys pic above.

I hate you, I lol'd for a good 5 minutes.

Side note, you could try the putty for gas tank/radiator cracks... it is like $7 at autozone.

I cant use it, the crack is in such an awkward area. I already bought the new tank. Just need a ghetto way to remove the retaining cam off the top of the tank without breaking it.

This is a really old thread you revived. What do you mean how do you find cap for this tank? To see if you are eligible for a recall contact a dealer.
