hp difference 87vs93 w/tune
perhaps an explanation would help here.....
basically your car operates between the low octane and high octane settings. Your ride starts up using high octane settings, and steps down towards the low octane settings until it finds the sweet spot.
but to answer your question, it's dependent on a car to car basis. my general rule of thumb is NA 4 bangers with full bolt on's will gain 6-15hp when combined with the premium fuel tune. my cobalt without bolton's gained a lil over 4hp, some tq, and made driveability much sportier. with each bolt on, the more a tune can compliment the ride.
i don't apply that rule of thumb to just ecotec's either.

If and when I get tuned, I may ask Trifecta to tune for 87. I'm only going to be running bolt on's, so the difference in performance will be negligable. Even if its 5whp, the money I'll be saving at the pump will be worth the sacrifice.
uhhhhhh, you get tuned for 93 and if you run 87 the computer will dial ignition back to match the lesser grade fuel, basically. don't get a half-assed tune dude. oh yeah, the difference is most diffinitely noticeable.
The only way the ECU senses it needs to retard the timing is through the knock sensor...If you tune for 93 and always fill up with 87 you will be knocking every single time you start your car or go WOT. Russian Roulette. This is assuming the tune is aggressive enough to even cause the knock. Just talk to your tuner about it. It's going to cost just as much for 87 vs 93, so he will only give you the answer based on what's best for your car with his exact tune.
hmm this is very interseting.....bc im getting a tune very soon here so while data logigng is taking place and i drive with 93 and get the tune intsalled and then start dirving with say 87 there would be a bad knock? sounds like to if if u tune with 93 run 93 if you tune with 87 you can use 93 what about a tune on 91 then using 87 or 93 ....? hmmmm i bet the knock would not be as bad....
When the tune changes to accomodate lower octane gas, the ONLY thing that changes is timing. due to the knock sensor increasing KR. If you are going to run 87 most of the time, GET AN 87 TUNE! If you get a 93 tune and run 87 most of the time, you will be making less on 87 than you could with AN 87 TUNE. On top of that, you will be having detonation issues consistently, in certain circumstances. Get the tune for the highest octane you will be running on a regular basis.
