Oil Capacity

I think this was discussed already but I can't find the thread. How much oil does the cobalt take. I checked the manual but I thought I read something somewhere that the manual was wrong.

I have a base cobalt... is the oil 5, 6 or 6.5 quarts???

Thanks!

both the L61 and LE5 take 5.0 quarts of oil. putting more in to make the dipstick read full is a waste of oil and also provides for the possibility of aerating your oil(not a good thing) under aggresive conditions.

Put 5 quarts in it. start the car let it run for a minute, shut it off and let it sit for 3 minutes, after 3 mins. read your oil level on the dipstick....regardless of where it is that is full. just keep a mental note. Dipsticks just give a general reading, they arent precision measuring devices, this combined with the various production variances involved with the metal stick itself, its plastic handle the metal tube, its sealing surface, the o-ring, the block's dipstick opening, oil pan thickness variation, amount of oil held in head and oil passages, amount of oil retained in filter, if you look at 10 dipstick all 10 may read differently even with crankcase filled with same volume of oil.

If you only put in 5 quarts it doesn't even read on the dip stick.

No wonder I never take it to the dealer, HAHA

All I have to say is that every application of the ECotec from 2002 til now including the Alero, Cavalier, Grand Am, Sunfire, Cobalt, Malibu, andG6 ALL HAVE USED 5 qts PER GM SPECS if you choose to overfill it and waste oil because you cant understand that a dipstick isnt a precision measuring device and the Serivce Manual is the proper information more power to ya'.

But doesn't the Cobalt have a stronger (and since different, possibly larger) oil pan, than the one in those cars you mentioned?

Yes there is more than one oil pan for the two engines and across all the different vehicle platforms, but they all use 5 quarts....except the mighty Supercharged LSJ because of its additional oil cooler.

So the CSS takes more than 5 quarts? A little confused with your recommendations here

Sorry Ninja.I get a little flustered from time to time when everyone jumps up and down and hollers this and that before they even read there owners manual.

The L61 2.2L takes 5.0 qts oil in all applications 2002-current

The LSJ 2.0L Supercharged takes 6.0 qts in both applications(SS/sc and Redline)

The question was asking for the capacity on the base car(L61) and I didnt notice 2k2CamaroSS had an SS/sc and thats what he was posting about,I also had a typo in one of my first post so that started the confusion(LE5 vs. LSJ)........and there have been other threads and even posts in this one with people claiming anywhere from 4.5 to 6.0 qts wasproper.
