Performance Chip (LOL)

So, I wanted to get people's opinions on something.

What I am refering to are the "performance chips/modules" that are on ebay.
You know, the resistors that plug into the IAT sensor.

Heres the hang up I have. I actually bought one about 2 years ago for my 99 Z24. It felt like it did make a differance, however, it may of just been a placebo effect. I never had the car dyno'ed so I have no idea if there were any ACTUAL gains. The mod makes sense in theory, but does any one know weather it ACTUALLY makes a differance or not?

On a side note, am I the only one that thinks chevy should have followed tradition by making the 2.4 SS one of the Z series IE: Z24, Z28, Z71, and kept the SS branding to strictly the SC applications?

Sorry for the ignorance on the "Performance Chip" but, if anyone can provide some insight one way or another, that would be cool.

Thanks!

Heres a little info on chiping, albiet the info applies to the j-body it should hold pretty true to our cars. Either way though, it all breaks down the fact that in most cases the price of most chips doesnt balance well with the power gain. An intake for example cost nearly the same as some chips, but will produce more power and will not hurt your gas mileage.

Anyways heres the link

GM for what ever reason when they killed the Z24 name plate here in the states , they do not want it on the cobalts

just like dodge wants to keep the neon name from the srt

it all because people do the whole name association thing , put Z24 on a cobalt , and it will get compaired to the cavalier

just like srt gets the whole neon thing , even though the neon and srt are the same car just different drivetrain

SRT's are neons, SS's are cobalts. i agree, the 2.4 could have been either RS or Zsomething, but i don't care if they called it a base model, if the car looked like it does and had the features it has, i'd buy it anyway. Go 2.4!!!

I am proud to have a 2.4L SS Cobalt. It have enough dedicated performance and appeance upgrades over the base/LS/LT to deserve it.

Yah and a Cobra isnt a Mustang. I would have no problem with them giving the 2.4 cobalts the Z24 name. It would stop making people believe that the Non SC SS is the same vehicle.

Or they could even change the number and make it like, Z25 or Z32, but SS in the past, has always been reserved for the TOP of line in the series.
I dunno, maybe for the 07 model year, though I doubt it.

The chips are junk....99 cent resistors from radio shack.
I made the mistake several years ago and bought them...big rip off.

Plus the resistor just fools your intake air temperature sensor into thinking it's colder than it actually is and that is where the "performance" comes in.

But personally I don't like something that by passes the system and fools it to make it work better. If you want a chip wait until superchips comes out with something or I've heard the Greddy, sorry if it's spelled wrong, isn't bad. But I haven't heard alot about the Greddy system yet.

E-mail superchips and ask when they're coming out with something for the Cobalts.
I know on other boards they've said that it's coming.

I'm waiting for the chip myself to mount a supercharger on my system, but won't bother until it's out.

Thats kind of what I was afraid of. As I said, I did the mod in my 99 Cavi, but wasnt really sure if it actually made a differance, or was more of a placebo. But for $5.00, its almost worth the possibility.

Typically though, I have found that if it is to good to be true, it probably is!

Greddy is a good company, so I think once the time comes, I will look into going that route.

Thanks for the info!

Cool. So, was it something that just plugged into the IAT sensor? Have any Dyno numbers?

If there were a cheap way to get more power GM would have already done it, unless you have a before and after dyno it is more than likely your butt dyno misleading you to think you have more power

the guy says gm doesnt do it because of factory emmision regulations or some sh*t like that.
It hooks right into the only one.
My account of my HP and Torque increase is unreliable though simply because i did the chip AND took out the big plastic air blocker thingy under my car at the same time.
The only reason i say the chip works is because i got ALOT more speed then wat i had in 3rd anf 4th gear and i doubt that just removing that piece of plastic did it.

The chip says it gives horse power, and thats wat i feel i have more of.

Take it for wat its worth but like i said, its only 24 bucks fre shipping so its worth trying. Unless your broke.
