Are there really any performance parts for an LS?

My gf got a cobalt LS. I tried to convince her to get the SS SC so she could roll with me somewhat. She thought it would be more insurance and a lot bigger payment. Even though the payment wouldn't have really been all that much more. Insurance wasn't much more either. ANYWAY!

I see the normal threads for exhaust and intake. I know those really don't add but a handful of ponies, and better throttle response to give you the illusion of even more power (at least that's how it is on the mustangs). Are there any real power adders (preferably kits) for the LS?

not really and none of the bolt on equip will give much more hp...while there are gains, they wont perform to their peak until an ECU tune for the 2.2l is released...then we will see some real gains....for now use the bottle lol

i was afraid of that. yeah, small little bolt ons don't do crap. unless you believe the manufacturer gains that is. real world numbers are only a couple WHP. are there nitrous kits made specifically for the LS, or do you just use a universal wet kit? also, what's the highest safe shot and do you have to adjust the timing at all on it to avoid going boomboom?

From what I know, the answer is no

All we can do for the 2.2L is add intake and exhaust. There is no chip or computer program for the engine to date.

There are super kits made for the 2.2L but the computer must be changed which we can't do yet.

From what I have seen, intake and exhaust might give you 10 extra horses, but only at the upper end. This is the route I will take for now.

You could add Nitrous

Can we even adjust the timing?
Is it controled by the ECU?

screw turbo. i'd rather a supercharger come out specifically made for the 2.2. a lot easier to just bolt a blower up (on my car it is anyway).

again, are there specific kits made for the 2.2 or are you just using universal kits? and what is the safest shot?

55 wet shot. I'm still a couple weeks off from having mine fully installed. Right now I'm still collecting parts. Picked up my fuel solenoid and line yesterday from my friend and all I need now is just line to run from firewall to intake, T fitting for my fuel line, and various adapters.

I'm with you. I want a turbo and cant wait to see how it will stack us up to the SS. Also we need something to be able to tune our cars ASAP. Does anyone have any idea if any venders are working on this or not. If not maybe we shoud start a thread asking for vender help with this issue.

It's hard finding things for the 2.2.

Im actually gonna save 4-5 thousand for around christmas time... If there is a successful turbo kit, or ATLEAST a ecu tune or somthing, I will spend the 4-5 grand on that. If not than screw it, im just gonna put air ride and do the interior, and maybe in the next 5-6 years I'll think about performance

For basic bolt ons and even some awesome engine internals (cams, pistons, rods, crank, etc) go to www.TurboTechRacing.com

There is a wide range of parts avaliable for the 2.2L as it has been around since 2002 in the J-bodies (cavalier/sunfire)

There are lots of parts for the 2.2L Ecotec. The only thing is most of them require computer tuning and hense either won't work or won't give us any gains since we can't tune.

just use a standard but high grade 4 cyl kit....wet is always better than dry...i am going w/ a 50-55 shot wet sys....best way imo

Every OBD2 car and most obd1 cars have ecu controlled timing.

Buy yourself a set of cams. You'll get a horsepower gain. Just change out engine internals, if you cant bolt on more horsepower, build up the engine (smartest thing to do). There will be MORE performance parts out sooner or later. Honestly, you can build up a 2.2 stronger than the ss/sc and a lot cheaper too.

You can get the computer tuned, just got to have connections with the peeps who have the equipment to do so. I doubt I even have the ability at work, but i can always check tomorrow.

Consider another reason you dont see performance parts... car has been out for 2 years, avg warranty is 3-5 years. Who'd be dumb enough to void it for a small performance gain? That, and the cobalt isn't a race machine as it is from the start.

yes, there are some changes we can make. turbotechracing.com has a list of performance engine parts that are for the 2.2L ecotec in all 3, cavy, fire and cobalt. stage 1, 2, and 3 cams. GMPP has a ported head for the 2.2L, 10.1:1 compression pistons, eagle rods. and there are adjustable cam gears for the 2.2L which alous you to change your timing, advance it or retard the timing w/ out the use of re programing the computer.

my friend has a ZEX 75 shot, he is going on deployment and selling it to me. he runs 15.1 1/4mile on nitrous in his cobalt LT. so yeah, those kits will work

so are you going to build up a engine from scratch? or are you just going to upgrade your engine?

The stuff opened up for us has made me double think if I really want to keep my Sentra. I could ALWAYS put a 2.2L ECOTEC in there as I have no engine. Just a SR20DE motor that I have for a rebuild. Hmmm....just don't have the money right now to keep both projects going if you know what I mean.
