Question G-Tech or G-Tech pro

I'm thinking about getting a G-tech or G-tech Pro. Does anyone have any experience with either of these units? How accurate are they? Do you think they are worth it?

i had a G-tech pro, but like an idiot sold it before i got my cobalt. IMO it is definately worth the 200$ just the amount of info that little box can give you. plus its easy as hell to set up. plug it in, takes about 5 minutes to calibrate it, and you are ready to go. its definately accurate, in my cavi, i ran 16.2 on the g-tech,went to the track and ran 16.3. i would tell you to buy it. and you can always rent it to your friends, to get some of your investment back.

I've got the regular G-tech, and I have never been able to get it to read the rpm's. There was a thread on here last fall where someone posted they had emailed them about the rpm issue and was told that the power from the cigarette lighter was too isolated and "clean" to read the rpm's through on Cobalts. It will still give you your times and such, just no shift light or decent torque readings (torque readings after a run have been anywhere from 90 to 600 ). I wouldn't bother with the pro version for this reason (only difference with the pro is it comes with a USB cable and software).

I couldn't tell you how accurate it is as I've never been to a track, but I do get very consistent times with it. Before stage 2 14.5-8@96-98 mph and after stage 2 14.1-3@104 mph (2.5+ 60's )

I've got a G-Tech Pro SS and for 0-60 and 1/4 mile it works GREAT!

The RPM pick up DOES NOT WORK for the Cobalt SS/SC. I've followed all the instructions and tried everything but the built in tach is all over the place. It's unfortunate because it has really bright shift lights but they are useless without a correct RPM. I have heard that it has the same problem picking up rpm from the SRT-4 as well.

The 0-60 is my favorite part. It has really helped me perfect my launch and shifting. After a run you can see a graph of the G-Forces. You can see where you are pulling hard and where you are loosing acceleration.

By analyzing the G-force graphs and practicing I was able to get my 0-60 down from 6.7 seconds on my very first run to 5.86 seconds! (Psss, The key is don't break the tires loose at the top of 1st and don't short-shift into 2nd)

Yeah they were showing max hp at like 7,000+ rpm in the other thread

Thanks for the help guys!!!!!

So without RPM does it still calculate accurate HP readings?

From reading the other thread, it seems as though there are no or inaccurate torque readings.

I guess the pro model would be useless, because without RPM or torque readings there would be nothing to graph, right?

G-Tech rpm workaround

I e-mailed the G-tech folks and asked them if they had a solution to the rpm sensing problem that our Cobalts were experiencing.

This is what they said:

"Dear Sir,

You can run another cigarette lighter straight to the alternator or
the battery.
That should solve the RPM signal pick-up problem.

Regards,
Gtech Pro Tech Support
"

Has anyone tried this?

everything voids your warranty... even if you paint something... or change your own oil... don't do it!!!

Word. Spend a few bucks to tune & test for a day and run down a track as many times as you want in a controlled environment. It's a hell of a lot safer than running a quarter mile on a public highway somewhere. Just my opinion.
