GM Performance Camshafts

So I was reading the GM Performance book the other day and noticed they had Performance Camshafts for the Cobalt. Any info on these? LSJ? LE5? Power gains?

I know they've made cams for the 2.2, maybe thats what theyre talkin about. They've had them since the Cavalier came out with the Ecotec. Maybe they make them for the S/C too.

These cams are specifically for the L61 engines through the 2006 model year. The L61 cams in 2007 have completely changed, and are not compatible. LSJ and L61 (pre 2006) cams are interchangable, but their timings are different, so some adjustable gears would be helpful.

I thought they were talking about the 2.4 cam blanks that GMPP sells. It would be lotsa fun to install a pair of them straight from GMPP - great compression, not much lift or duration...

^LOL Actualy no compreson. You would however have bent valves in a big hurry. You would have full lift all the time with a cam blank.

Haha, nice. That sucks, I was hoping to order some performance camshafts and put em on. Oh well.... by the way, do we have a price estimate on JBP's cams? I see that install will be about 150, the cams themselves 600+, core charge 250, and timing chain tool 250?... Is it really this expensive for a set of god damn cams??? Why do we not have ANY aftermarket support including turbos!!!???

Dude dont waste 150 bucks on installation. DOHC Cams are SOOOO easy to install. I did an LS1 cam in one day, and thats OHV setup. The only PITA is keeping the timing, and even thats not very hard. And dont buy the tool, thats a waste as well, you can use other methods of keeping timing... Like a friend holding the gears while you swap the cams. Unless you feel thats worth 1/2 the cost of the cams themselves.

Actually, on a 3.1 Beretta, I would take a head gasket job before a cam. Only because a cam on that car means jacking up the entire engine a little bit and sliding it out of the wheelwell, lol. I'm not really an organized person so I wouldn't be able to write out a how-to, but Im sure there is one if you were to google it or something. Maybe for the 2.2L and its the same concept really.

What type of changes were made to the cylinder head that made them incompatable? Just curious.

$150 for installation...i'd be extremely wary of this. That is EXTREMELY cheap. Most shops charge $50-75 an hour (sometimes more). This is an involved install.

If you don't believe me, ask Fred @ SMG.

The 2007 L61 has a cam position sensor. So the cam now extends outside of the head. The GMPP cams would not provide a signal to the sensor.

I never said anything about LS1 having overhead cams.

OHV = Overhead valve = cam-in-block

The LT5 (ZR1 'Vette) is DOHC. LS series engines (LS1,2,3,4,6,7) are OHV setups.
