HELP! alternator problems.

So i was driving to my friends house and when i pull up I hear the A chime.. I look down and it says power savor.

Partied alittle and went home. I place my radar detector on volt meter and I could see that it was at 10.5 and dropping.
I raced home and then picked up my BF from the bar.

The lights were barely on.

I just replaced my battery 3 months ago... My boyfriend is not a macanaic but he thinks its the alternator... We do have a sound system in the car and its roughly 900 watts.

Any help on this would be great.

How do he take the alternator out? any read ups on it?

Thanks,
Tanya

Can get it tested at a parts store.

Take belt off, unbolt power cable and unhook sensor, unbolt mounting bolts

yup pretty sure the alternator is bad. The battery only helps jump start the car the alternator is what does work. Thought check the connections on the battery.

Yes he checked the connection. He also disconnected the amp and taped the wires.

Does anyone know what wrenches he needs to fix it? We don't have any and will probably just buy the size we need.

Geez. You didn't get a CEL indicating that? I started my car up with out the belt on for trouble shooting and it ran like garbage and it threw a cel...At least its fixed.

Also wtf is up with a $340 alt!?

The alternator would have costed me $391 brand new from Auto Value
But I had a coupon from SUTP for 15% off. bring it down to $340

No warnings...

Sucks...Just for future reference...Many shops can rebuild alternators for a fraction of that and my local shop will have it done the same day if they have it in the morning.

Not to mention you can buy this: 06 07 CHEVROLET COBALT 2.4 L MECHMAN BILLET HIGH OUTPUT 240AMP ALTERNATOR | eBay

Which is a higher amperage than stock.
