help with removing shift knob on cobalt SS

help with removing shift knob on cobalt SS

I have tried searching high and low, and i have come up with NOTHING.. i have a 2008 SS, and I am wanting to get this god awful shifter knob off, and replaced with one that doesn't suck.. how do i remove the stock one? thanks!

ya dont, its pressed on, only thing you can really do is get a hurst sts and that has a diff knob on it.

welcome to cobalt lol

First lower the boot by twisting it and pushing it down. There are some "teeth" that have to line up with some slots before it will slide off.

Next, with boot down, take a small flat headed screw driver and carefully bend back a few of the pins that are holding into a groove in the shifter shaft. (there are four of these pins)
I only had to bend back two and the knob pulled right off.

That doesn't work on the SS/TC. There is a torx screw on the top under the silver and black cap with the shift diagram on it. However, I took the screw out and it was on there pretty solid still. I was afraid I would pull the leather part right off before it came free. Might have to heat it up to get it off. Not sure, I was looking to see if there was a trick to getting it off easily. It's not looking like it...

I use a small two jaw puller; the factory says to use a long screw in the center where you removed the locating screw.

good luck, got so pissed off at mine ended up cutting it off and putting a hurst in.
