Looking for some paint prep advice.

I will be sanding my rims down shortly to get ready to paint them. The plan is to start with 320 grit on the DA and go from there, spraying them with primer(not a rattle can) and then a few coats of dupli color rim paint and rim clear. I'm going to pre lim guess about 5 coats of light paint or so, and 3 of clear. Anything I'm missing here?

Also, I plan on doing my VC, coil cover, and rail cover. I'm guessing same concept, sand down not sure what grit though, clean and prime then spray. I'm going to use the GM factory paint in a spray can for this, so hopefully it won't bubble and peel if prepped right. Is the blower the same thing, sand it down clean it and prime and paint and clear?

better make sure that primer can cover.... good automotive primers cover 180 grit scratches but rattle can isnt the same nor do you get the build with it.

I would probably use 600 grit to prep it. 180 - 320 is pretty deep / wide and you won't have the fill from the paint like you expect. Just keep in mind if you ever decide to strip it off and go back to stock, you'll have to restore it with polish and the finest grain I would go for polishing is about 800-1200 depending on what I was going to deal with.

Hope this helps.

We are going to use normal spray gun primer from my buddy's body shop, and i will have to change up grit's then. so do the rims and vc, plug well covers etc in 180 grit. Same with the blower, or just scotch pad it and clean/prime it?

180 grit is still crazy low even for paint prep. Just ask your friend at the body shop what he would use on automotive body. My guess is at least 600 starting and working up to 2000.

The shop actually said 320, and my dad has done paint work for years. I guess I'll have him step up to 4 or 500. I know we still have some higher grit left from painting my old talon. like 1800 i think.

I think we have a winner ^ Mine are so badly chipped from a poor paint job though we are going to sand them down. I plan on doing a 2 tone black, silver anyhow. At least till I order my new rims.
