Triple gauge pillar for the Cobalt?
Ok guys heres what autometer sent me:
Tom,
We're currently looking at mounting options for the Cobalt.
Unfortunately, because of the A-pillar airbag, we are prevented from
doing simple A-pillar pods or pillars. We will have to design a dash pod
of some sort.
Thank you,
Matt
Wonder what it will look like?

Damnit! But what about those of us who DON'T have side airbags LIKE ME!!!
I honestly thought I had come in this post and stated that we had scrapped the idea and were waiting for Auto Meter's release... I guess I must have had it on my mind and just thought I did it or something.
Sorry for not letting you guys know earlier. I hope Auto Meter or possibly ProParts can come up with something that solves this gauge mounting issue.

So if the airbags are a problem, make the A-pillar design for all of us without that option. And don't forget the sedans!!
So that would make 2 designs (coupes and sedans) with a lot of business to support those 2 designs.

I have sent another email request to Auto Meter about the non-airbag ones. I also sent another email request to a compnay called Lo-Tek. They are the ones who make the gauge pods for the Grand Prixs and such. Their quality is excellent so I figured why not give them a try. They also have a group buy set up through them if there is enough demand for new gauge pod orders from forums(i.e. us) and whatnot. I will keep you all updated.
OK i have another update...this time GOOD news. First here is the post from autometer:
Tom,
We're going to do them. Pass the word! We will have a dual and triple
pillar available in about 6-8 weeks. Check back in about a month for an
update.
Thank you,
Matt
I asked them if they were going to be making them for the cobalts without side airbags (coupe/sedan) and thats their answer.
Now as for Lo-Tek, if we want to do a group buy for them, here is what their website says:
Attention car clubs and Internet forum groups. We can manufacture custom gauge holders for your vehicle. Prices starting at just $20 for single pods. Full-length pillars as low as $39.
Minimum order quantity is 30 per project. Some models may require a higher minimum. If both double and triple gauge holders are requested, this represents two projects and consequently, requires 30 pre-paid units each. All orders must be paid prior to project start. Pricing will be determined after receipt of OEM part for evaluation. Most of our products range from $40-$60 ea. Shipping charges and color matching is extra.
REQUIREMENTS:
Name, address, and contact information of project leader. Follow-up will be with project leader only. (Please do not have others call for status)
OEM part from project leader. This will be used for fabricating the mold and is non-returnable.
Make, model and year range specifications.
Color samples (at least 4"x4" sample) of all colors to be painted.
Gauge Size requested (usually 2 1/16" and/or 60mm). Note: some models may not accomodate 60mm gauges due to width limitations.
PRODUCTION SCHEDULE:
Rough mock-up will be made and sent to project leader. Project leader test-fits mock-up - checking for clearance problems and angle of gauges. Project leader returns the mockup with any modifications and approves the design.
Mold-making process - approx 4-5 weeks
Initial production run - approx 3-4 weeks
Finishing and shipping - approx 1 week after product availability.
*******IMPORTANT********
PRODUCTION SCHEDULING IS COMPLEX AND DELAYS ARE NOT UNCOMMON DUE TO THE NUMBER OF PROJECTS AHEAD OF YOURS, MATERIAL LEAD-TIME, ETC. WE DO OUR BEST TO PROVIDE A RESONABLE ESTIMATE OF DELIVERY TIMES - HOWEVER, WE CANNOT GAURANTEE A DELIVERY DATE.
If you guys want to do a group buy on them, let me know and ill cordinate it. Maybe we can do a group buy through autometer....ill see what they say.

Not sure how they're gonna be able to do it legally, but as far as we've been told on the RL forums whenever we tried getting somethng like this together, is that the company is not LEGALLY allowed to produce a pillar replacement or pod for any car with side curtain airbags, for whatever reason. I believe we contacted that company Lo-Tek and they said they wouldn't do it because of the side curtain airbags. Just letting ya know what we've been told and somethng you might expect to hear.
This is awesome news!
I personally feel that we would be best to get behind the Autometer project for a group buy. That way we have one manufacturer responsible for the pillar fitment AND gauge fitment. This would eliminate any potential for for finger pointing between manufacturers should quailty and gauge fitment become issues. The group buy could also be negotiated to include an Autometer gauge package with the A-pillar?? More money saved????
Getting a choice between a 2 AND 3 gauge pod from Autometer for coupes and sedans and interior colors would make just about all of us happy. Well, except for those with the side impact airbags.......bummer. Looks like Big Brother once again has been given too much strength.

You know what would be nice, something like what they have for the GTO on the dash in the middle. If they could make a piece to fit on top of the dashboard in the center above the vents that looks stock (as if it came with the car) that would be sick. I forgot what company makes it for the GTO. They even make the 2 1/16 guages that look like the speedometer guage. I think the company starts with an A. But yeah something like that i'd be interested in.
