Official: Autocross and Road Racing Thread

Due to the amount of people posting in my thread, I figured this would be a nice thread to have where we can all discuss our setups and such. Lots of other forums have this and it helps others eliminate trial and error along with tons of searching to find out what works.

However, I assume lots of us will be running Powell parts

For your first post, please follow my post below to get some details in about your car/setup. The more details (alignment specs, tire width, brake pad model, etc.) the better. Feel free to elaborate on anything about your setup you would change or any issues you ran into.

-Nathan

2009 Cobalt SS with G85

- GMS1
- K&N drop in filter & ZZP factory intake mod
- ZZP Cat-less downpipe
- Hahn 3" cat back exhaust
- Powell YYZ V.3 springs
- Powell XXX rear sway bar
- OEM front pads and rotors, OEM rear rotors with HPS pads.
- 18 x 8" +38 offset O.Z. Racing Ultraleggera wheels (18.5 lbs. each)
- 235/40/18 Direzza ZII's (Treadware rating: 200)
- Alignment= Camber: -1.4 front/-0.5 rear, Caster: 3.4 front, Toe: 0.1 front, 0.0 rear

- Future plans -
- Prospeed RS683 brake fluid
- Goodridge steel brake lines
- Powell CAB's
- Power Grid adjustable sway bar end links
- Koni adjustable shocks/struts
- Powell tow hooks
- Steel base shifter bushings

Notes: Extremely minor rubbing in the rear with the Wheel/tire setup, will be doing a minor fender roll. So far, successful setup (DSP & SMF) in the events/competition I have ran against. Personal thread here: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/auto...thread-310103/

I would say that would be more than enough.

To be honest, there are more things to account for within the tune for road course use. High loads for a long duration of time = lots of heat and stress. Keeping EGT down is crucial from what I understand.

Agreed....the 6758 should push 20 psi more efficiently than a K04....but I think ...don't think I can do 15 psi.

Eh, I'll bite.

I just do track days. I generally do two events (4 days) a year at Road America, and then a couple day events at other area tracks, mainly Blackhawk Farms.

Maybe one or two autocrosses a year, but I just go for fun. I'm not competitive, and I'm also stuck in SMF.

Good read.

I've had rwd cars on the track and like a setup that's more prone to oversteer (if it wasn't neutral). But with mine I'm thinking id rather have the opposite. Under steer can be corrected (like stated by john) with carefully backing off the throttle (hopefully not causing liftoff oversteer) and straightening the front wheels slightly. I've seen too many videos of guys in these cars on the track where either liftoff oversteer, suspension setting setup incorrectly (overly stiff rear sway bar), or slight driver error has led to the ass end of the cars coming around. Not that under steer in extreme situations is pretty either, but its more controable in these cars.

I'm running a hardcore rear bar, yyzs (v5) zzp bbk up front and will be getting konis as well, probably going to run direzza z2s. What's everyone prefer for tire sizes, pressures and shock (koni) settings?

I couldn't resist any longer and ordered some tires. 245/40/17 Hankook Z214 C71 compound.

I still don't have the Team Dynamics wheels I ordered in January. The next autocross is June 21 and 22. Hopefully they will be here by then.

Good thread is good

Second year auto x'ing

Car and mods:
2009 Cobalt ss
yyz v3
koni yellow
xxx bar
K&N
zzp Dp
trifecta tune(use stock on track)
17x9 team dynamics with old rs3's 255 40 17
Raybestos black box pads
bps short shifter and cable clamp/base bushings

Future mods:
Cabs
rear beam bushings
camber plates for -2.5-2.7 degree camber in front
Custom ucrs being made by a few of us in our local cobalt club
stainless lines
tires, tires and more tires.

Car is perfect the way I have it now, get's the back end out when you want into corners and it very stable/predicable in every way. Just need some r comps or newer street tires to be competitive in STX, and lots driver mod

We are blessed with being able to rent a 1000 foot by 500 foot runway pad at a local airport, which gives us big fun fast courses.

Here's some of our club members

Pic from last year

Current setup, requires a 5mm spacer in the rear to clear tires. Much worth it for the extra tire, had no problems keeping up to all the porsches at the local porsche club auto x a few weekends ago.

^^ whats the reasoning behind the staggered setup, then throwing camber in the rear? Essentially couldn't you just run the same size tires front/back and achieved the same kind of balance without the camber? (assuming it's to clear the fenders etc?)

If anyone has helpful threads they think should go into my second post, feel free to comment with a link. I'll get around to finding the rest I think are good in two weeks when my finals are done.

Would this thread be better split between road course and autocross?

I run road coarses, so far averaging around 3 track days per season. I haven't done much to my car. It's an '09 SS/TC.

Hahn Intercooler
Hahn DP
Hahn CAI
Hahn Charge Piping
Trifect Tune (stock on track)
Factory rotors and pads up front
Centric rotors and powerstop pads in rear
Super Blue DOT4 brake fluid
BPS Shfit Linkage

After a 2 day event at Watkins Glen I discovered my left front caliper is binding, so I will be rebuilding that before my next track day in July (Pocono SouthEast). I also want to look in to Powell rear sway, ss brake lines and floor mounted gas pedal (I have a hard time heal-toeing on the track).

I run my street tires, Continental ExtremeContact DW, with pretty good results.

I've ran 2 track days so far with the above setup with satisfying results and 4 tracks days without the engine modifications, also with good results. I've only done 6 track days with the car total.

Anyone having ebrake issues after autocrossing? Within 2 autocrosses, my ebrake doesn't really hold well. I park on a slight hill at work and the ebrake handle is pulled all the way up and if you rock the car, it'll start to slip.

I've had the rear calipers changed under warranty already as well.

I haven't had any issues myself. Just never, use your e-brake after a session, turn the car off and leave it in gear. Have you also tried adjusting the e-brake?
