Calgary - random talk thread
(When I was an active member) Calgary Firebird Club members would bring all their trivial/technical questions to yours truly...
better yet swap in 1970+ 350, 400, 455 - those blocks have the same external dimensions, bellhousing ect...
does your car have the electronic distributor?
(is there a blockoff infront of the shifter on the console - or is the console molded over infront of the shifter?)
the only weak point for any swap is the three speed auto which your TA has - even the 301T cars had a beefed up variant iirc...
and no, I do not think your TA has a th350 - it's the smogger era metric crap that GM made for that time period. (But I have been wrong before)
If you swapped in a P350, that was nothing special it would probably get by with your stock transmission... or I might be able to source you a BOP th350/TH400 (the latter requires the cross member be relocated and a different slip yolk).
the 265/301 were a "short-deck" pontiac block - short compared to the 1955-1979 "regular" Pontiac V8's
okay cool. I'm not sure if it's electronic distributer. I'd have to check when I get home. I was thinking of finding a 455 and swapping that in but the majority of people seem to be doing the 400 swap and punching it out and stroking it.
The shifter is in a console which runs from the dash to behind the front seats.
Also I saw a silver box behind where the radio used to be which looks like an ecm box but it can't be with the carb. could it be a transmission control module?

but you can make roughly 300hp & 350ft lbs witha Pontiac 350 ~ and they are peanuts in asking price (generally) compared to the 400's...
the early cars had either a map pocket infront of the shifter, or an 8-track player in the same location;
the later cars at first had a block off covering the spot - then the area became molded over - this was done because there was a tiny circuit board which controlled the HEI in the later cars ~ but I'm not sure if that was a 1981 only deal ~ or if it was phased in during the 1980 model year.
FYI: The Camaro opted to not use their in house designed console as of 1972 or 1973 and started using the Firebird console as a cost savings measure.
Back to engines - if you go any bigger than a 350 I'd encourage you to not waste your time blowing up the original 3 speed auto;
either swap to a (hopefully stout) TH350, or go manual (but that requires different pedals, and some linkage ~ and if you do go that route get a T-10 or Muncie four speed ~ a P400/455 will grenade a saginaw four speed in short order...
Those Firebirds are big tinker toys...
had some visitors last night
one of which at first glance looked to be an orange SS/SC... but it was a boosted 2.4!
well - today looks to be a nice day... probably going to waste some time in PNP looking for electrical connectors...

^^ the last couple times I went, were because my brother dragged me, or I went with jordan to get something for his car...
this time around I'm looking for (rather obscure) connectors which would otherwise cost aprox $100/each (just for the female ends!?)
